Watchable but ultimately forgettable. KStew was good though!

As a lien knock off Cisco, there are much worse entries than underwater. Nice atmosphere, quick pacing and a solid lead performance are only hampered by a PG-13 rating, occasionally overly murky visuals, and the derivative nature of the premise. Some of the more sarcastic elements of the production design nail the grim futurism, and the whole affair is elevated by a downright Lovecraftian ending that connects to the themes introduced early on. This movie wasn't awful, but it was super generic and forgettable. Kristen Stwewart wasn't bad though and actually carried it pretty well, but I honestly didn't care much for any of the characters even T.J. Miller who was really just there to add jokes at the most inconvenient times. The creatures weren't very interesting either, although it did have some tense moments. The PG-13 rating is such a buzz kill though and is the main reason why I'd rather just watch the old school, classic underwater horror films of the 90's like Deep Rising, Leviathan or even Deepstar Six.

Generic, but stylish and entertaining.

Cast overall is strong, but Kristen is just plain great. I find her increasingly magnetic these days. I hope she gets the big mainstream hit she deserves.

Agreed Stewart was great in this. Her recent movies might not have lit the BO on fire but she has been outlier in them.

The Kristen Stewart comeback tour finally produces a winner with Underwater. Sure it has corny dialogue, you can see the deaths coming from a mile away and South Park kind of did the same thing already (Underwater 2 - let's drill on the moon!). Who cares though? It has a relentless pace that keeps tension high all through the 90ish minutes. The creatures are pretty threatening as is but then they just keep growing bigger and bigger. Fucking Chthulu himself even shows up to say Hi.

Strong movie. Great stuff from Kristen. B+
