Midsommar is a 2019 folk horror film written and directed by Ari Aster and starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Archie Madekwe, Ellora Torchia, and Will Poulter. It follows a group of friends who travel to Sweden for a festival that only occurs every 90 years.

Thought this was a little disappointing. Was feeling the first half but I kinda thought it ended pretty weak (though I really liked the last shot)

Pugh is great and it's very well filmed.

What this, and Hereditary, fail to realize, despite all the time they spend setting up the plot, is that real life is scarier than death cults. Ari Aster once again builds a magnificent world, one that reminded me of Barry Lyndon in that every shot looks like a painting, but blows it with his hyper-cynicism. Hey everything is preordained and despite the fact that every dead character made a foolish decision that lead to their deaths, we needed five outsiders to be sacrificed all along so nothing they did ever really mattered.

It is an instant horror masterpiece, in my opinion. I have seen it twice so far, and the question of whether it is "scary" or "disturbing" (it is) is transcended by its ability to almost...rewire the viewer's brain over the course of two-and-a-half hours. I leave the auditorium, and this remote, sunlit commune where serenity abruptly gives way to ghoulish violence, feeling a heightened blend of awe and unease. The film uses its epic length in tandem with the top-flight, hyper-detailed production design and lustrous cinematography to uniquely envelop the audience in an otherworldly milieu. It reminds me of The Witch in this regard, an incredible sense of submersion and texture. The concept of "this is a movie, I am watching a movie" fades away. There are so many moments here—the firefighters discovering the murder-suicide scene in the prologue, the elders leaping from the cliff, the marvelous Florence Pugh's soul-shredding screams, etc.—which instantly burrow under one's skin and stay there, deep.

Saw this twice in theaters. Wish I had a chance to see it again. The chilling opening is absolutely brilliantly done and could be its own short film. Pugh herself is instantly captivating. I'll admit this is very much a slower paced film and while I did think a couple scenes went on a little long I mainly had a problem with this my first viewing. Didn't take issue with the pacing at all the second time. I don't think the movie goes somewhere totally satisfying in the end (had that same problem with Hereditary) but I enjoyed the journey and it's so marvelously made. There might not be a more beautiful looking film this year. It will have been robbed when it fails to get nominated by the Oscars for its cinematography. Pugh is fantastic and award-worthy too.

Anyway, I'm glad I at least got to see it in theaters twice as it's fucking gorgeous and a treat to see in a cinema. Also, I do really dig the last shot. It's wicked. This is probably my second favorite movie of the year right now.

I wish Ari Aster would change his mind about wanting to take a break from horror because I love the way his mind works.

9/10 (A)

Yeah I actually ended up enjoying this more than I expected. I honestly found it to be much better than Hereditary, although it's quite slow at times, and it does feel pretty bloated. I was never bored though, and Ari Aster really shows off his skills here when it comes to the direction and cinematography, but I also thought the technical aspects of Hereditary were really well executed as well. Hell even the performances are pretty great especially Florence Pugh and Will Pouter, but I can't say that I was all that invested in any of the characters even though some really awful shit happens to them.

better than Hereditary. but still trash.

I personally feel the failure of Hereditary and this compared to a another slow-burn film like The Witch is that the latter doesn't try to pretend its not still a horror film throughout the runtime. Hereditary and Midsommar both are faking horror up until the very end when they just UNLOAD everything all at once. The Witch is a slow-burn but it never loses sight of the fact that it is a horror movie.

I feel Ari Aster is trying to make drama films but use the horror genre to tell these stories. The Witch is a horror film that is also just dramatic.

Yeah, you kinda nailed my issue with him on the head.
