I thought this was solid but it kinda felt off in the acting from the leads.

Beautifully filmed but incredibly slow. Scenes go on for far too long. The scenes with the two young lovers are very repetitive and you never actually get to know these one-dimensional characters. It did start off fine but pretty much right after the meeting of the two families it just got increasingly uninteresting. I have no idea how Regina King is such an unbeatable front-runner for Best Supporting Actress. She's fine here but hardly great. Really doesn't deserve to be nominated let alone win.

The cinematography and music are great. I don't think there's any other aspect I strongly enjoyed. It's a bit of a slog to get through.

5/10 (C)

I agree about King. She's good but her role hardly leaves an impression.

It is gorgeously shot and scored, but also an utter bore. Those endless scenes of the idealized lovers staring at each other in doe-eyed rapture... I constantly wanted to escape them and follow the myriad more compelling one- or two-scene characters on the periphery.
