Quote:
Crazy Rich Asians is a 2018 American romantic comedy-drama film based on Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name. Produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, it is directed by Jon M. Chu. The film stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Kris Aquino, Lisa Lu, Nico Santos, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh, and follows a young Asian American woman who travels to meet her boyfriend's family, only to find out they are one of the richest in Singapore.

Crazy Rich Asians is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 15, 2018, by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is the first film by a major Hollywood studio in 25 years to feature Asian-Americans in the predominant leading roles since 1993's The Joy Luck Club. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances and production design.

Absolutely delightful, with a starmaking turn from Constance Wu and a breakout comedic performance from Awkwafina who steals every scene she is in. It's a really sweet, fun movie and a total crowdpleaser. Feels like a nice throwback to the classic romantic comedy in the same way Set It Up did earlier this summer. I'll be seeing it again. A-

Well, because the site is dead, and it's a rom-com and this site is 100% male.

Where's your review?

I'll be seeing it sometime. Would have last week but my friend wanted to see Slender Man more. Bad bad choice. Thankfully this will be around longer so I have plenty of time.

This was decent but it spends too much time introducing the scenery with one-after-another party. There is not much time left for a story or romance for that matter, its structured as another Greek wedding where the bride and groom are friends. The final conflict and resolution are also not romantic enough. Its not bad but its definitely overrated, I guess I will put this into the "critics just wanted to love an asian movie".

5/10

CRAZY RICH ASIANS

I thought the film was okay. I don't get all the hype. Watched it will a sold out audience about 100 folks and there was laughter sparingly throughout the film. I thought Awkwafina was the best part of the film. All her scenes were funny. Also enjoyed the gay cousin. Constance Wu was delightful. Ken Jeong was completely unfunny in this. He was a caricature. I liked Michelle Yeoh and the grandmother. I guess I would be interested in seeing a sequel just to continue the series since there were two more books, I think.

Grade - B

I am surprised that the movie has made no reviews here (I count 4 now but that's very less). I guess KJ is not really interested in watching this or they don't want to give poor ratings to this.

So currently the most reviewers are cory, DIB, TDS you, stuffp, David, Mike and myself and given the status this movie is receiving I thought movie fans will be propelled to see what the fuss was all about.

Definitely enjoyable. Like Juliet, Naked I would have given this a B+ initially but after sitting with it I'd give it a B. Still a cute movie. A little long but charming. Awkwafina was hilarious. I would not be opposed to a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her. I also am happy they're adapting the other books in the series because I do want to see more. Plus Henry Golding is gorgeous. :wub2:

7/10 ( B )

I found Golding to be the weak link here not only in terms of character but also acting. He is mostly there for eye candy of girls I guess. I also found him very weak in ASF.

I don't think he's an amazing actor but he's a likable guy and definitely works as eye candy. I didn't know you saw A Simple Favor. Hope you enjoyed it.

Pretty damn good. The only thing keeping me from completely loving it is the Astrid storyline. Apparently I’m supposed to give a shit about her marriage because it’s supposed to be an inverse of Wu and Golding (or their future...probably not) and she apparently plays a bigger part in the sequel books by getting married to the guy she stares at at the engagement party during the credits. But, in this movie, am I supposed to care? Because I didn’t, outside of thinking how stunning Gemma Chan looked. The movie grinds to halt whenever she has a scene with her husband. The scene with Wu on the beach works though.

So yeah, I don’t think there’s one false note here, which for this genre is incredibly impressive. Even the well-worn scenes like the one on the airplane are absolutely charming. I especially liked the ending. There’s no big cry and hug moment with Yeoh and Wu. From the mahjong to the ring to the look at the party, it’s all incredibly well done.

I could’ve used another scene with Ken Jeong. Actually, that whole family is amazing, especially Awkwafina’s brother. I’m not sure where the book series goes, but if that character doesn’t have his own book that’ll be a crime.

Really enjoyed the movie, but the last 10 minutes or so (Mahjong scene, airplane scene and then the last scene with Yellow playing in the background) is stellar.

Post Re: Crazy Rich Asians
I found this film to be singularly creepy. It felt like I was watching something alien and soulless and empty while wearing the veneer of a warm, fuzzy and familiar story (it ticks all the rom-com and Cinderella plotline boxes of course). But it all felt cold, artificial, manipulative. The mom suddenly relaying her story of abuse. The glamorous sister getting cheated on. The handsome boyfriend professing his love. All of it was horribly acted and scripted, it seemed amateurish.

And then there's the real black hole heart of the film: the fact that at no point is the 'crazy rich' part ever looked at with anything other than fawning admiration. After the film I told my partner that if this had been set in, say, Germany or even Latin America, one of the lavish parties featured in the film would have surely been a charity event (and yes, those can be status markers too, where you pay a lot to get a table and it all goes to a "good cause"). But there's nothing like that here. If this film is a genuine peek into the Asian upper class then it's very interesting that there seems to be zero sense of noblesse oblige among that ilk. Equally puzzling was that scene where the glamorous sister literally just asks a kid how she is doing, and that's somehow equated to "having a heart of gold". Really low standards there. The final scene with the ridiculous fireworks and aquatic dancers (for what? an engagement announcement?) as the formerly down to earth protagonist embraces her new uber wealthy life was far more disturbing than anything in The Nun.

I was really surprised by how poor and sane the Asians were in this movie.

It is a very cute rom-com. And it is somewhat inspirational property porn. It is too sappy sometimes, and I thought Awkwafina had a better performance than the much hyped Michelle Yeoh. Still enjoyable though.

So, I cracked. And my tear ducts almost did too. And the film's lovely. Really enjoyed it. If you like ridiculous beauty and ridiculous wealth, you'll love it. I did not care for that. It's like an Asian version of 50 Shades of Grey but without all the bondage. But it's simply a well-made rom-com. I actually didn't laugh at all. The comedy is more for Asian people. Awkwafina is so unfunny it's not even funny - if that makes sense! I was more struck by the struggle and romance side of things. More relatable for me, I guess. Actually, Ken Jeong was pretty good in a comedic role.

It's amazing how Asian the movie is. Besides the obvious cast being totally Asian; there's dumpling making, street food eating, Mahjong playing, Cantonese speaking, Mandarin speaking, but the funniest thing of all is that "Mr. Perfect" is essentially just a British gentleman. Only with a slight Asian look about him. Ah, the Brits...still the best. ;)

And the third-act change of heart by Michelle Yeoh was totally not in-keeping with how families like that work. They do not throw caution to the wind. But I guess because she wasn't the first choice to marry her own husband, that affected her decision to do a complete 180 here. I didn't mind it because I liked the typical rom-com aeroplane ending, but I think it's worth mentioning how weird of a U-turn it is.

Oh, Constance Wu was great, and absolutely stunning. A great casting choice.

A bit painful to watch, not funny, cliched romance. The only good thing to take away from it, is that their are a lot of pretty people on screen, especially Constance Wu surely is a charming presence. But this was totally not my kind of film and was glad when it was over. Barrabas' words ring true.
