 The Last Picture Show
The Last Picture Show Quote: The Last Picture Show is a 1971 American drama film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, adapted from a semi-autobiographical 1966 novel of the same name by Larry McMurtry.
Set in a small town in north Texas during the year November 1951 – October 1952, it is about the coming of age of Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms) and his friend Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges). The cast includes Cybill Shepherd in her film debut, Ben Johnson, Eileen Brennan, Ellen Burstyn, Cloris Leachman, Clu Gulager, Randy Quaid in his film debut and John Hillerman. It was one of the first films to have used a contemporary popular music soundtrack and, for aesthetic and technical reasons, was shot in black and white, unusual for its time.
The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and four nominations for acting: Ben Johnson and Jeff Bridges for Best Supporting Actor, and Ellen Burstyn and Cloris Leachman for Best Supporting Actress. It won two: Johnson and Leachman.

 Re: The Last Picture Show
It's a really beautiful, tragic depiction of "coming of age". I agree with the points Magnus made ten years ago, it definitely feels derivative of other films, even though it likely precedes all the films I'm thinking of. But there are some really terrific performances here that elevate it even more. I think of Cloris Leachman more as a TV actress, so it was nice to see the movie for which she, was not only nominated, but also, won.
I was completely shocked, I suppose at my lack of knowledge, that there is a 1990 sequel called Texasville, which reunited most of the cast. I think that would make for a good book, upon which it's based, but not sure about a movie. The Last Picture Show works so well because we get this very specific glimpse into their lives at this point in time. To see more feels like it would cheapen the original.
