 The Final Cut
The Final Cut Quote: The Final Cut is a 2004 film written and directed by Omar Naim. It stars Robin Williams, James Caviezel, Mira Sorvino, Mimi Kuzyk, Stephanie Romanov, Genevieve Buechner and Brendan Fletcher. It was produced by Lions Gate Entertainment and filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and in Berlin, Germany. The film featured original music by Brian Tyler. The story takes place in a near future in which people can pay to have their babies implanted with memory chips. These "Zoe Implants", developed by EYE Tech company, record every moment of their lives, so that they may be viewed by loved ones after one's death. The plot centers on Alan Hakman, a "cutter", whose job it is to edit the Zoe footage into a feature-film length piece, called a "Rememory".
The Final Cut is about subjectivity, memory and history; posing the question, "If history is what is written and remembered, then what happens when memories are edited and rewritten?"
The film won the award for best screenplay at the Deauville Film Festival and was nominated for best film at the Catalonian International Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.

I thought the movie was...twisted. Like, One Hour Photo twisted. There was some fan-freaking-tastic performances from everyone, and some great camera work, especially in the ZOE chips/rememories. The score was good enough. It had it's moments, but nothing spectacular. I liked the idea of the story as well.
The problem with the film is identity crisis. It doesn't have a central message. It touches on severl different themes but never really stretches one out. And there could have been some really good themes. It's the same problem I had with Hellboy: good movie, but disappointing because of it's lack of a central theme.
Overall I'd give it a C+/B-. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. The ads claimed it to be a thriller, but I didn't consider much of one. It was more of a drama with a little bit of excitement.

What a great idea and what a messy execution.
The whole idea of the entire life being recorded on a microchip is quite original and could have been turned into something great, but instead of that we get a messy story with some slumped ending. Robin Williams is really great as always, but Mira Sorvino is wasted and as I said, the movie NEVER explores its potential.
