Quote:
Alone in Berlin is a 2016 war drama film directed by Vincent Pérez and written by Pérez and Achim von Borries, based on the 1947 fictionalized novel Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada. The novel's characters Otto and Anna Quangel are based on the real lives of Otto and Elise Hampel. When their son dies in France, the couple start writing postcards to urge people to protest against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. The film stars Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson, and Daniel Brühl. Principal photography began on 27 March 2015 in Berlin. It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.

Post Re: Alone in Berlin
A by-the-book movie that is propelled by brilliant performances from Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson. The script and direction fails to display any kind of suspense to the main story, though we do see one scene at the start of the movie with the neighbors death. Brühl does good from a small role but his redemption at the end is not earned at all, nor are his choices justifiable. If not for the leads this would have been a forgettable experience as of now you can remember Otto and Anna's courage, thanks to Thompson and Gleeson.

5/10

Alone in Berlin

A pleasant, flawlessly made, slow-burn World War II thriller from actor-turned-director, Vincent Perez. Lovely story, and I am pleased people are still making films about this era. I still find them ever interesting. Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson give convincing working-class German performances.
