Re: Logan
One of the best superhero movies and easily the best in the X-Men/Wolverine series. Perfect ending to the character. I don't care about most superhero movies and avoid most Marvel movies. I even thought the trailer for Logan was boring and found myself tuning it out whenever I went to the movies and it played before something. But great reviews and the "R" rating got me to check it out and I'm glad I did. While not generally into these movies a great movie is a great movie, and Logan is a great movie.
9/10 (A-)

Is this the best film ever to be released in the first quarter of the year?

Re: Logan
I agree... But since I've joined KJ in Q2 of 2015 I haven't seen such overall great reception to a film so early in the year.

Re: Logan
It is one of the best, but I cannot forget other great first-quarter films like Taken, Payback, The Passion of the Christ, Deadpool, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Enemy at the Gates, Chappie, The Matrix, Zodiac, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Rumble in the Bronx, Falling Down and, of course, The Great Wall.

Re: Logan
Ah yeah, there's in those cases plenty that would indeed give Logan a run for its money.
Be interested to see the stats on that.
Which would then look as follows.
Logan: 3.8421 The Matrix: 3.8333 Zodiac: 3.7451 Silence of the Lambs: 3.7037 Payback: 3.5000 V for Vendetta: 3.4286 Kingsman: The Secret Service: 3.4091 10 Cloverfield Lane: 3.2857 Enemy at the Gates: 3.2000 Taken: 3.0571 Deadpool: 3.0526 (so it got a lot of B's) Watchmen: 2.8793 Chappie: 2.8571 The Passion of the Christ: 2.6000 (Don't think we expected it to be this low) The Great Wall: 2.3333 (LOL)
Logan at the top!

I knew many of them wouldn't have a high general ranking...I thought at first to just mention those contenders as The Silence of The Lambs and The Matrix only, but then I thought I could just keep going. Also what came out of that little research, that while Deadpool was very well received, it's nowhere close to the reception Logan receives on this board.

Re: Logan
I loved the first two acts of this movie and was fully ready to jump aboard the hype train, but then that third act happened. It wasn't bad per se, but compared to what had come before it was just a little underwhelming IMO. I hated when X-23 started talking and I wasn't a big fan of the whole thing with the kid mutants eventhough I understand why they did it. The X-24 clone stuff was kind of iffy too, but that scene at the house was fantastic. I liked how they handled Xavier's death, because I totally didn't see it coming and that speech he gave before he died was heartbreaking. Same goes for Wolverine's death at the end and I'll admit Laura saying daddy twice was really effective. When the emotional moments hit they definitely hit hard in this movie and the violence is unflinchingly brutal, but with the exception of the ending and that last shot which was perfect that third act could have been a lot better. All that being said I still really enjoyed it. Jackman and Stewart gave their best performances out of any other movie in this franchise and it is a proper send off for them both.

Re: Logan
Yes agree the stuff with the kids at the end was the weakest aspect of this film. Yet overall it's still top shelf.

Re: Logan
This was brilliant and aside from the forced X-Men finale the final death and overall first two halves are raw emotions. There were lot of heartbreaking scenes with all of the deaths or titular characters and the family. X-24 wasn't just good enough here and I expected a bit more stiffer fight. Regardless this movie isn't about those fights its those raw emotions building overall for that perfect send-off to the character.
8/10.

Re: Logan
Are these "third act with the kids was weak" comments what constitutes the Logan backlash? All great films have them.

Re: Logan
I don't think so. Its just pointing out that if the film had any "weaker" points its the end. Still a strong "A" film for me.
I personally hate backlash for films just because they have mass appeal or for fanboy or political purposes. Really irks me.

Re: Logan
I just thought the final act was forced into the story to make it look like a X-Men movie. Its not bad by any means but completely out of pace from the rest of the movie.

Re: Logan
COMPLETELY out of pace/place, guys! You heard it here first. It is the equivalent of shoehorning Powerpuff Girls into a Rob Zombie movie.

Re: Logan
I'm saying your comment is ridiculous. You're trying to claim that the final act is somehow weird ("completely out of pace") because it is trying to be an X-Men movie, when Logan and Professor X. (the people we've spent the entire film with) are X-Men characters.

Re: Logan
But the first two halves of the film doesn't pretend or do what a traditional X-Men or superhero movie does. They wanted to please the fans and they rushed it in the final act. Its not about those characters itself being in the movie but this movie is great because they are so much like regular people in here for the most part.

Re: Logan
Yes. I get what you're saying. I guess what I'm saying is that if you only like the film because it features Wolverine and Professor X. as "regular people", and feel the final act where the kids with the superpowers are on display ruins that, then you're watching the wrong movie. This is an X-Men spin-off. And I think the only element where the film tries to please fans is in Wolverine's overly violent kills. Adding a bunch of kids to the film is not trying to please fans. It is an integral part of the story.
