Principal photography began in July 2015 in Chicago. The film premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

An utterly charming account of a first date, Southside with You would work even if we didn't know the couple at the center were the future President and First Lady. Parker Sawyers and Tika Sumpter are terrific; neither much resembles either Barack or Michelle Obama, but you can actually see them within their natural, effortless performances. Incidentally, the movie feels a bit too short. I could've used about 10 more minutes. B+
