Concussion Quote: Concussion is a 2015 American biographical sports thriller and medical drama film starring Will Smith portraying Bennet Omalu, the forensic pathologist who fought against efforts by National Football League to suppress his research on the brain damage suffered by professional football players. The film was directed and written by Peter Landesman, based on the 2009 GQ exposé Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas. The film also stars Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Albert Brooks. Re: Concussion (2015)
This was conventional but pretty good for the most part and is buoyed by a sensational lead performance by Will Smith - who turns in some of his finest and most committed work in years. Albert Brooks is also excellent as is Gugu Mbatha-Raw (even though I wish her character had a bit more to do). It's a pretty thorough examination of an appalling subject matter, but ultimately proves to be a crowd pleaser in the vein of something like Erin Brockovich. Definitely worth seeing. B+

 Re: Concussion (2015)
A rather pedestrian screenplay elevated by Will Smith's central performance, a fine cast, and an interesting subject matter. B-

 Re: Concussion (2015)
It's pretty straightforward and unimaginative, but Will Smith gives a dedicated, strong performance that centers the film. B-

 Re: Concussion (2015)
This may be a braver feat of cinematic journalism than Spotlight. Put another way: is it easier to criticize the Catholic Church or the National Football League in the United States today? In what may be his most interesting performance to date, Will Smith plays Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian pathologist employed by the Pittsburgh coroner. He is perplexed by the mental deterioration and death of a beloved former NFL center who, post-retirement, became estranged from his family, poorly repaired his rotting teeth with superglue, and used a Taser as a pain reliever. Despite obvious mental illness, there is no visible damage to his brain. Subsequent study, however, reveals the constrictive and degenerative buildup of protein. Dr. Omalu terms the disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and posits the ailment, the symptoms of which include hallucinations, memory loss, and impulse-control problems, is caused by frequent head trauma. Rather than embrace and reflect upon his discovery, the NFL responds with denial and intimidation.
An earnest and deadly serious whistle-blowing drama, Concussion is not immune to treacle and could benefit from a more consistent and propulsive pace, but it exhibits surprising and welcome courage in portraying the NFL as a cold and conspiratorial corporation not operating in the best interest of the beaten, bruised, sweat-drenched men it all but promotes as gods. The film raises its eyebrow in general at the religious exaltation of this gladiatorial sport which has become so deeply woven into American culture. And it refuses too simple or soothing an answer. The protagonist finds a degree of recognition and praise, yes, but as the camera surveys a field of teenage athletes preparing to smash one another in pursuit of "glory," the truth is unavoidable: the hits are here to stay.

 Re: Concussion (2015)
I find it amazing that Will Smith has opted out of only choosing cash-in blockbusters and is instead using his cred to take power to the man. That's a very rare choice these days.
Concussion is quality biography of a man I'd never heard of. This is the kind of movie that makes me love movies. *B+*

 Re: Concussion (2015)
Concussion has a pretty great movie inside of it. It's just too slow and feels bloated. Smith is very good here, but its not like his performance is so great that the Oscars not nominating him is racist. I mean, he was nominated for The Pursuit of Happyness, a much weaker performance in my opinion. Intriguing subject matter, and overall I found the execution more inspiring than Spotlight. But it still could have used some work in the editing room.

This was better than I expected. Smith is good as is the supporting cast, but considering the subject matter it could have been a stronger film.

 Re: Concussion (2015)
^ Exactly. The movie was good and Smith was great almost close to his old self but this leaves very little emotional impact. The supporting cast is also good but Will does stand out here.
6/10.
