Quote:
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (known as The Grinch for promotional purposes), is a 2000 comedy film from Universal Studios and Imagine Entertainment, based on the 1966 TV special which itself is based on 1957 book of the same name by Dr. Seuss. Because the film is based on a children's picture book, many additions had to be made to the storyline to bring it up to feature-length, including some information about the backstory of the title character. Most of the rhymes used in the book were used in the film, though some were slightly changed, and new rhymes were put in as well.

Directed by Ron Howard, produced by Howard and Brian Grazer, and starring Jim Carrey, it is the first Dr. Seuss story made into a feature film. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but spent four weeks as the #1 film in the United States.

DreamWorks Pictures was originally planning to co-produce the film, but dropped out at the last minute.

The Grinch is the highest-grossing Christmas film of all-time with $345,141,403 worldwide.

Yuck. Don't even get me started...

I'm probably going to get stoned to death for this, but I LOVE this movie. I'm dying of laughter at some of the scenes in this movie. Jim Carrey was great in it and it really puts me in the Christmas spirit whenever I watch it. One of my all-time favorites. A+

Not nearly as bad as some make it seem. The production values are splendid and Jim Carrey is incredible.

The production values and Jim Carrey are good. Everything else was painful.

Comon, it wasn't that bad. The story and format of the movie knew where it was going, and the production values were well done. The who's may have looked freaky, but it is a perfect fit for a strange world of Dr. Seuss. Jim Carrey made a nice Grinch. A good movie for Holiday fanatics.

Grade: B.

Lots of red and green and snow and such, but utterly lacking in any sort of true holiday spirit.

Kind of annoying, too.

Not only does it drag on like a bad SNL sketch, but it's probably one of the ugliest looking movies I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through. D

I watched it again recently for the season. Yeah, it's pretty terrible. The whole thing seems little more than an excuse for Ron Howard to spend a lot of money and Jim Carrey to improvise a lot. I admit, though, a lot of Carrey's jokes make me laugh, but the only good parts of the film are when he's talking to his dog. Seriously. I could care less for those Whos.

The story just cannot be stretched to a full-length feature film. Or maybe it could, but they just took it in the completely wrong direction. And I too just dislike Howard's direction here. Everything LOOKS great though, and I agree with just about everyone that Carrey is fantastic.

This movie is horrible. It is everything the book is not. The sets and makeup and costumes are ugly. It's bloated, it's boring, it's wholly unnecessary. The pop song sucks. The whole point of the story is The Who's didn't care about presents. The movie is all about The Who's being materialistic and there is no believable reason for their change of heart. And The Who makeup is stuff of nightmares. It's full of lame childish humor and lazy pop culture references and awkward adult jokes. This film is painful to sit through.

Surely it would be "unnecessary" if the film was everything the book was. As it's "everything the book is not", it makes sense that it's made. There would be no point making the film if it was identical to the book.

Then make an original film. The point of an adaptation is to translate an experience to a different media.

lol. Where'd you find that definition? There are many goals in adapting something to film. It is not always to "translate an experience to a different" medium. For one, that is impossible. But two, perhaps Howard did translate the what he believed were the more important elements and left others behind. Seems many people agreed with him, too, as the film was a wild success.

Still cannot fathom how anyone enjoys this movie. I actually do think that they did a great job with the Grinch's makeup and costume. The Whos still look awful.

Like the humor is so dumb, I can't imagine how anyone finds it funny. Just about every line made me cringe. There are a few chuckles, but they're few and far in between.
