Post Re: The Bronze
I can't remember the last time I saw an actress portray a proper bitch like Hope Annabelle Greggory, at least not a character who wasn't a villain. Hope is the hero of this movie, a hero so mean spirited that even her devoted father calls her a 'bitch'. Melissa Rauch's work here makes Dr. Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz look like a sweetheart. The Bronze is an unusual comedy about an ex-Olympic medalist struggling with her fading fame. The humour is surprisingly dark and the movie often plays as much as a tragedy as a comedy, while it definitely earns it's 'R' rating with it's intense and creative swearing (not to mention it's gymnast sex scene). Then, despite all that, it ends up being authentically inspirational. It's a strange bird. *B+*

** / ***** (D)

It's really a strange movie. Melissa Rauch is actually pretty good in the mean bitch role, but the movie is not as funny as it thinks it is. When you're going with the mean type of humor you really need to nail it. Not just be mean, but you have to have a reason and that in turn will make it funny. Most of the mean humor here is been there/heard there kind of humor. The best scene (the gymnast sex) doesn't have anything to do with meanness which says it all.
