The Wolverine

Quote:
The Wolverine is a 2013 American-Australian superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine. It is the sixth installment in the X-Men film series and follows the events of X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Hugh Jackman reprises his role from previous films as the title character, with James Mangold directing a screenplay written by Christopher McQuarrie, Scott Frank, and Mark Bomback, based on the 1982 limited series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

McQuarrie was hired to write a screenplay for The Wolverine in August 2009. In October 2010, Darren Aronofsky was hired to direct the film. The project was delayed following Aronofsky's departure and the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. In June 2011, Mangold was brought on board to replace Aronofsky. Bomback was then hired to rewrite the screenplay in September 2011. The supporting characters were cast in July 2012 with principal photography beginning at the end of the month in New South Wales before moving to Tokyo in August 2012 and back to New South Wales in October 2012. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.
The Wolverine was released on July 24, 2013 in various international markets; and is scheduled to be released on July 25, 2013 in Australia, and on July 26, 2013 in the United States and in India.

WOLVERINE

First off, I wish this film was more bloody and more gory. I really want to see wolverines fangs ripping into folks and what not. The action is pretty good in the film imo but the close quarters action can be too fast and blurry. I liked the intro, whole Japanese setting/charactes Yukio Harata the villains. The Silver Samuraii was cool and action nice but kind of an underwhelming fight at the same time. Idk. Also, the whole Jean Grey dream sequences were just not necessary. Once or twice but I think they did like five and it was just a bit over the top. Finally, I thought the film was good, not great. Certainly interesting and entertaining with some nice action sequences but also a part in the middle was dialogue heavy and almost putting me to sleep.

Grade - B

It goes completely off the rails in the third act (and can I reiterate how stupid bone claws are? They're awful), but up until then it's actually quite good and shockingly personal for a superhero film.

I'd give it a B too. Enjoyable but I think with a better story/script the movie really could've been a lot better. I liked the action scenes though. The chick who played Viper was awful, they should've gone with another actress or another villain . The Logan/Mariko stuff was kinda bleh, but I thought the other girl was surprisingly very likable and cool.

Post Re: The Wolverine
In the context of the ongoing, ever expanding and contracting X-Men franchise, numbering six films with a seventh in production, The Wolverine, though imperfect, is far closer to the cream of the crop (X2) than the lowest of the low (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the character's first standalone adventure and a complete creative dud). In each conceivable respect, this represents a vast improvement upon the other Wolverine solo film. Rather than focus on dense mythology and nonstop teasing nods to the main X-Men storyline (though do stay through the end credits), it spirits the clawed fan favorite to a strange new land (Japan) and places him within a largely self-contained crime and suspense storyline. This gives the character space to breathe and brood and results in general in a crisp, straightforward, and very entertaining superhero film. There is a sense of relaxation, too: this is not a film intended to define its franchise nor to launch a thousand sequels and tie-in merchandising deals (as with Man of Steel) so much as please the audience and not diminish the X-Men brand. Unambitious? Perhaps, but it is a small, potent pop triumph in this season of computer-generated bloat. My only real significant complaint is the cinematic realization of C-string Marvel antagonist Viper, a campy thrift-store Poison Ivy who never fits comfortably into the film as a whole.

B+

I wonder if Yukio will be in Days of Future Past? Her leaving with Wolverine at the end would indicate yes. I hope she is. Cool character.

I liked her too. Much more than Mariko.

I found the train sequence more exhilarating than anything in Superman.

Almost as bad as Origins. It seems the filmmakers still can't find an interesting way to approach the character if Wolverine on his own. What really brings the film down is that this storyline could have been accomplished without throwing in a major villain. Viper is such a generic villain and she doesn't work in the scope of the film. Also, the dialogue in this film is cringeworthy at times.

Honestly the only good scene in the film is the credits scene which definitely got me more pumped for Days of Future Past

I agree with jmovies - I don't think Wolverine (or any X-Men character, for that matter) will work in a stand-alone film. This movie is boring. And Viper made a terrible villain. The story was pretty lame, too. What was there to like outside of a few solid action sequences?

I enjoyed its low-key vibe and emphasis on character beats (honestly, it becomes notably less interesting during the final action sequences).

I never once found it boring.

That said, Viper absolutely shouldn't have been there. This film didn't need a mutant villain.

The post-credits scene is cool for who's in it, but the scene itself is actually pretty wonky and goes on for too long.

I actually found myself quite happy that the film drops the action for about thirty minutes to build characters. It was almost, you know, a real movie and not some stupid summer blockbuster.

And then of course it becomes a stupid summer blockbuster in act three.

The most annoying thing with Viper is how pointless she is. She exists solely for there to be a mutant bad guy. Just make Will Yun Lee the Silver Samurai (who is not a giant adamantium power suit thing) who wants Mariko for himself. That solves a number of problems in one quick move.

I actually have McQuarrie's script but I haven't read it yet. I'll try to do it this weekend and get back to you. As far as I know, it's a prequel to X-MEN and Wolverine's the only mutant in it.

Biologically, why does he have them? Why in the world would his skeleton have that feature? (It also completely contradicts one of Stryker's lines in X2. "You were always an animal, Wolverine. I just gave you claws.")

Post Re: The Wolverine
I actually really enjoyed it. It was slight in the humor and focused on telling a story rather than fitting in the pieces of the mythology like the first one. It's a completely different animal and Jackman has never been better as Wolverine. I disagree about the love story, it actually felt more genuine than most comic books I've seen.

The action scenes were great and real treat. I loved the Wolverine F bomb again as well. As most people have said the final act does seem out of place, wondering if reshoots took place. But I still enjoyed it. Viper sucked but because she played it like such a weird bitch
Spoiler: show
Her death got such a great reaction in my theater

My only real issue is this: Why would Jackman remember any of the Nagasaki stuff, didn't his memory never recover in the film continuities. I mean it would have been better to say he has no recollection of the events, and then when he actually stood over it 50 years later, he gets the memory back, could have been a real emotional scene for him continuing to remember who he is, while trying to forget others.

Oh and the post credit scenes is probably the best post credit scene ever. I can't wait til next year. Please give bind the adamantium back on his claws though. there's no point otherwise.

A for me. I think while my initial reaction to MOS and IM3 is stronger, because the scope is much larger in both, there is a lot more to admire in this film, and I think repeat viewings will be good.

Rank time:

X2- A+
X-Men A+
X-Men: First Class A+
The Wolverine A
X-Men: The Last Stand B+
Wolverine: X-Men Origins B

Well Logan looks much older in the early photos than he did at the end of this one. I'm starting to think there will be three timelines explored in this one. The 70s, the present, and 100 years into the future. apparently members of the X-force will be in the new film.

I'm excited, it's going to be one cluster fuck of continuity.
