Yeah, having the First Order be that powerful so soon after the Empire's collapse really did serve to cheapen the significance of the OT's arc (even if it's not necessarily so unbelievable).

The second I saw "the tyrannical First Order has taken the place of the Empire" in the opening scroll I knew this would be a mess.

It's true that the whole new set of films started with the fatal flaw of undoing the original trilogy for no reason whatsoever.

Well that's not true.

The Empire only lasted 23 years (Technically 17 when the first Death Star was destroyed and the Resistance got their first major blow the Empire,) Then there was peace that broke down as a Civil War between another Senate, and the major heroes all left (All Deleted Scenes from TFA) that lasted roughly 32 years when The First Order unleashed Starkiller Base, and destroyed all the Galaxy Democratic planets.

This is a movie about how awesome the original trilogy and it worked really well at the time. It’s just a shame that some very vocal members of the fanbase couldn’t handle Star Wars being anything but a celebration of itself.

Who was funding the First Order? How did they get the resources to make a weapon 100x more powerful than the Death Star, which itself was a huge deal to get planned and funded and had been referenced all the way from Attack of the Clones? Lucas actually made it realistic how they could get such a huge, powerful weapon constructed. Just the set up of it was a big deal, with secret plans, construction over decades, referenced in like four movies, whereas Starkiller Base just kind of appears out of nowhere. Or is this all answered in TROS? I haven't been able to watch it because no one I know wants to see it (which itself is sad).

This was decent even though derivative its executed very well and a new beginning to the SW arc with new interesting characters and the charm it has lost in action is helped by Abrams' world building that keeps things interesting. Ford as Solo is still amazing and it was sad to see him leave the series for good.
