Re: Pixels
PIXELS
It's more entertaining that the last few Sander films but it doesn't have the magic of a really funny comedy. There are certainly moments that I enjoyed but for me there were quite a few scenes that felt flat. Maybe Sandler's character was a little too deadpan at times. Josh Gad's character is probably the funniest overall. There was a scene of him doing a cover of a song that sounded funny when I heard him talking about it on GMA but when I watched it it wasn't funny at all. Kevin James and Monaghan had there moments and I thought Dinklage was good in his role. He did a good job. I thought the visual effects were actually pretty cool and the end credit sequence was a nice touch as well. Overall, it was a decent comedy but nothing too memorable.
Grade - B

Re: Pixels
Too bad because, even given his track record, I didn't think Sandler and Co. could screw up what is at least a potentially entertaining popcorn flick.

Re: Pixels
As of writing this, Pixels stands at a lowly 19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. That usually isn't a good sign and I'll admit I didn't have the highest of hopes going in since Sandler's last decent movie goes back four years (Just Go With It), and let's just say he wasn't making gems immediately before then and since.
But color me completely surprised. Pixels is an entertaining movie. Don't get me wrong, the movie has its fair share of problems, most of the women in the film are sought after as trophies (and those women have a weird tendency to not have lines of dialogue). I will say though that Michelle Monaghan has a couple of good moments throughout the film and she gets to kick ass with the rest of them at the end. Also, like with a lot of recent Sandler films some of the comedy falls completely flat. And I thought the film was also setting up at the end that we were going to see what the real aliens looked like full on, but that doesn't happen. They only appear in the form of another 80's arcade game. The only time we ever see their true form is in their first transmission when they briefly appear over Reagan's face.
What can I say though? I laughed quite a bit and I was entertained. Sandler and James aren't annoying and Gad and Dinklage are welcomed additions. It's (pathetically) one of the rare instances where I can say that I was entertained when describing most of Sandler's movies post 2003.
And that 19 percent rating is too low. I understand that he's burned many a critic by having them sit through his recent work, but I think Pixels deserves a little better.

Is your avatar one of those trophies sought after by you, like all the Boston sports trophies in your signature block?

Re: Pixels
It's better than most of Sandler's latest efforts, especially shit like Jack and Jill and Grown Ups 2, but it could have been so much more in capable hands. The scenes with the videogame characters going ape shit are easily the best parts of the movie and then the crappy, stupid, homophobic, Sandler/Happy Madison humor ruins it.
