Let me just say that the cinematographers, costume designers, visual effects artists, etc. that have brought us such a beautiful film have really accomplished something. Every shot is a work of art, and I was thoroughly enthralled. Oscars in technical categories should happen.

However, the film as a whole is the textbook definition of style over substance. There is no real plot here, and what is given is very weak; pretty much an excuse for more balls to the walls action; which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I though Kingsman from earlier this year did it better. Plus the only character with a real arc of any sort is Furiosa; the rest of the characters are just sort of there as the action unfolds.

This is an enjoyable film; I would gladly wallpaper my room with shots from it. But it breaks no sort of narrative ground.

"Talking isn't necessarily communicating."
The substance of the film can be found in the production design, not the dialogue.

One of the best things about Fury Road is that the film is about Max helping Furiosa rather than needing his own artificial 'arc'. If anything, Nux probably has the most complete character arc in the film.

character development and narrative complexity are overrated traits in cinema; this is a visual art, it's not literature

Is there some sort of deep meaning in this that I missed, or do people just like it because of the well shot action sequences?

It is a very detailed world full of imagination. It tells it's story and doesn't have to puff it up with needless side plots and long dialogue scenes. It just tells it story well through visuals and the ability for the audience to lose itself in its creative world.

Is there deep meaning in Harry Potter? lol. People just like Fury Road because it doesn't try and be more than it is. It does what it does VERY well.

No one claims Harry Potter is a artful masterpiece. I thought something had to have a deep meaning to be Oscar worthy.

lol, of course not. And who are the people claiming it is Oscar worthy? I don't think anyone is claiming it should win Best Picture. Probably just technical nominations would suffice.

I dunno, I've heard plenty of people saying its an outside shot.

I don't mind a story being told through visuals, but Mad Max didn't have a great story to begin with, IMO.

Ok, so I guess you don't see it as an achievement to turn a film with a basic plot into a cinematic masterpiece.

This film breaks ton of ground action and visuals wise. But I think a film needs style and substance to be a masterpiece. But if you're right, and hardly anyone out there thinks this deserves Oscars in categories other than technical, than it is simply on the level of Guardians of The Galaxy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Edge of Tomorrow, Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation, and other highly acclaimed films that no one seems to think deserves Oscars.

Well, personally I would be very happy if it wins Best Picture, but it's not going to happen, and I won't care when it doesn't. I think Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation should get Best Picture.

Still a masterpiece. It tells the story of a layered world without being bogged down with dialogue. So refreshing.

I can't believe people are "meh" on this movie here. It's easily one of the best action films ever, IMO.

I watched it again, and I liked it a bit less. Literally the only thing that is good about this movie is the visuals and the action. Even the action gets extremely repetitive, and the film even gets dull at points. There is also the fact that almost nothing happens in this movie. Furiosa rescues the mothers or whatever they're called, tries to take them back to her homeland, and then they head back to where they started when they realize her homeland is no more. It's a two hour movie, but it feels like 4. There is enough interesting visual stuff to keep the watcher from being bored most of the time, but I don't understand how anybody could possibly love this movie that is really kind of boring and repetitive for the most part.

I agree. It's right there with Die Hard and Speed for modern action classics.

I think Fury Road is great, but I didn't get why anyone would call this such a great action movie. It's a thrill ride overall, but it has a lot of slow paced parts, that I don't find it an action movie in the true sense. It's car chase movie where plenty of stuff happens, it's greatly filmed, and a well told story. But Speed and Die Hard kept me much more at the edge of my seat. Speed has some flaws as well, while Die Hard is pretty much perfect in every sense. You could totally put all of them in one sentence though, as they all belong to the best films of their decade.
