 The Canal (2014) The Canal Quote: The Canal is a 2014 Irish horror film that was directed and written by Ivan Kavanagh. The film had its world premiere on April 18, 2014 at the Tribeca Film Festival, and stars Rupert Evans as a father investigating a horrific murder that took place in his home in the early 1900s.

The Canal
This is a sensational horror film. It doesn't rely on jump scares or monsters (paranormal or otherwise), and much like The Babadook (another great horror film not made in America) it uses the horror within. It conjures up real dread, and it chilled me to my bone. On numerous occasions I had chills down my spine (all down my back actually). Fuck, what a great film. Not only did it really frighten me, it has a great script (really realistic dialogue), great performances (especially the adorable Calum Heath), and some quite disturbing imagery. Once again, as I seem to keep saying, the best films are made in Europe. Trash and copies and formulaic crap is made in Hollywood. If you want the best, check out Irish or British films. I know I graded It Follows very highly, but this is the film that It Follows wanted to be.
