An involving, at times very heart-wrenching documentary with interests both ecological and political. Executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, it focuses on the titular Congolese nature reserve and the various existential threats it faces, including poachers, volatile groups of rebels, and a British oil company. There is an arresting, suspense-film quality to many of the scenes, including secretly filmed depictions of the web of bribery and intimidation spun by the oil executives. A few figures emerge as heroic and inspirational, particularly Andre Bauma, doting caregiver to orphaned mountain gorillas.
