This Spanish import is a very solid science-fiction film. It is set in Barcelona in the aftermath of a global epidemic causing extreme agoraphobia. To step outside causes people's hearts to seize in panic, so instead they hide inside and only travel underground. Two men venture forth into this fractured world, one searching for his pregnant girlfriend, one for his elderly father. Their hesitant partnership forms because one has a global-positioning system and the other a flashlight. The idea may sound ludicrous on paper, but it is realized well in regard to world building (the emergence of tribalism in metro stations and shopping malls, the desperate collection of rainwater) and also proves interesting on a metaphorical level (an apocalyptic extension of the antiseptic, technology-centric insularity of contemporary urban life). The performances are not flashy, but competent and engaging, and the photography is often very atmospheric and graceful.
