Aux yeux des vivants [Among the Living]
Aux yeux des vivants [Among the Living] Quote: Among the Living (French: Aux yeux des vivants) is a 2014 French horror film that was written and directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. The film had its world premiere on 10 March 2014 at South by Southwest and follows three young boys who discover that the seemingly banal exterior of their town hides a horrific inner secret.

This is a weird beast. The directors Bustillo and Maury (I interviewed the latter right after the screening) obviously wanted to pay homage to Steven Spielberg, Frank Darabont and, most of all, Stephen King. The film's opener is a pretty demented scene, featuring Beatrice Dalle referencing Inside, but then we get to the part, when it plays out as your typical 80s coming-of-age flick. The setting, the kid actors and the atmosphere are pretty damn great. But it's the final 30 minutes, when the shit hits the fan and we land squarely in Maury/Bustillo land of bloody horror, when the film falters. The "creepy monster" is just not creepy enough (though I give them props for probably being the first film in which someone is killed by being chocked with a foot) and the horror is not scary enough. It just kind of happens and before you know it, the film is over. There is a long, good set-up, but the pay-off is very disappointing.
