Post Re: Maidentrip
In August 2010, at the age of 14, hyper-determined New Zealand-born Dutch sailor Laura Dekker began her bid to circumnavigate the globe solo, a feat never before realized by a person her age. In January 2012, she achieved her goal, ending her epic journey in Saint Martin. Furious debate raged in the Netherlands before her departure regarding the safety (and indeed the sanity) of her proposed adventure, with a court delaying it for months. Her bold, dangerous, inspirational, quixotic story is recounted in Maidentrip, a masterful documentary directed by Jillian Schlesinger and largely shot (so, in a sense, co-directed) by the subject herself while at sea. The film triumphs on at least two notable levels. It is a first-hand, intimate spectacle. Viewers can almost feel the blazing sun and sea spray through the screen, and there is an inherent and powerful cinematic quality to images of a single person on a single sailboat in the grand, unforgiving context of oceans. There are also several tantalizing stopovers in such exotic places as the Galapagos Islands and French Polynesia, providing brief, but welcome glimpses of animals, landscapes, and the inevitable sense of community and understanding shared by sailors and travelers when they find one another amidst their divergent individual escapades.

It is also a powerful coming-of-age story and character study, the story of a teenage girl becoming a woman while living on the edge. Over the course of her year-and-a-half maritime trip, Laura wrestles with numerous Thoreau-worthy questions of identity and purpose as the monetary-centric daily routine of the Dutch suburbia she left behind becomes an ever more distant memory. She also endures (and learns to enjoy) substantial periods of absolute and profound isolation, ultimately inspiring her to consider whether other humans are more trouble than they are worth. There are points throughout where her intense and almost paradoxical blend of courage, curiosity, longing, and melancholy is vividly felt, including a midnight crossing of the equator which finds her singing along to Kool & the Gang's "Celebration," recognizing the moment with a performed joy reminiscent of a New Year's Eve gathering, and then staring quietly into the empty nocturnal expanse of ocean around her.
