Quote:
Venus in Fur (French: La Vénus à la fourrure) is a 2013 French drama film directed by Roman Polanski, based on the play of the same name by American playwright David Ives. The play itself was inspired by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's novel Venus in Furs.

The film premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival on 25 May. In January 2014 the film received five nominations at the 39th César Awards, winning for Best Director.

a startlingly incisive act of self-criticism

I have had this sitting on my computer for months and I still haven't watched it. I love, love, LOVE the play though.

This falls a hair short of the top-tier Roman Polanski films (Repulsion, Chinatown, Macbeth), but it is an enormous amount of sexy, smart fun and a splendid showcase for its star duo, the always magnetic Mathieu Amalric and the director's wife, Emmanuelle Seigner, in perhaps her finest film role to date. I have neither read the play from which it is adapted nor seen it live, so every twist and turn—who is dominating who?—came as a surprise to me, and the film riveted me despite its limited scope. It is a blast to absorb its details and then piece together potential veins of tension and significance, self-referential or otherwise. Also of note is an absolutely gorgeous score composed by Alexandre Desplat.

Great performances from both leads and the limited setting adds for some truly unique and riveting dialogue. Definitely one of Polanski's best in the new millennium.
