Quote:
Spider-Man is a 2002 American superhero film, the first in the Spider-Man film series based on the fictional Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It was directed by Sam Raimi and written by David Koepp. It stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, a high-school student who turns to crimefighting after developing spiderlike powers, along with Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin, Kirsten Dunst as Peter's love interest, and James Franco as his best friend.

After being stuck in development hell for nearly 25 years, the film was licensed for a worldwide release by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 1999 after it acquired James Cameron's original scriptment. Directors Roland Emmerich, Tim Burton, Chris Columbus, and David Fincher were considered to direct the project before Raimi was hired as director in 2000. Koepp wrote the script, using Cameron's scriptment as a basis, and it was revised by Scott Rosenberg and Alvin Sargent during production.

Filming took place in California and New York City from January until June 2001. Spider-Man was released on May 3, 2002, and became a critical and financial success. With $821.71 million worldwide, it was 2002's third-highest-grossing film and is the 29th highest-grossing film of all time. Spider-Man was, for its time, the only film to reach $100 million dollars in its first weekend, the largest opening weekend gross of all time, and the most successful film based on a comic book. The film's success led to a successful film trilogy composed of it, Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007), all directed by Raimi and starring Maguire, Dunst and Franco.

Great movie the first time you see it. Replay value is low however. Kirsten Dunst has nice boobies too.

Great movie. I love the camera and the actors so much! It was time for a big "one-superhero" movie!

It's not shameful. It's one of the best. Everything about this movie is excellent. The performances by McGuire and Dunst are great, and they have quite the chemistry. The special effects are awesome. It's not as good as the sequel, but still one of my favorite movies, and certainly one of the best comic book movies ever.

A+

While it's not my favorite comic book film, it's a good movie. Tobey Maguire is pretty good, as is the rest of the cast. The 2nd one was a big improvement though.

Besides maybe The Ring, Spider-Man was probably the most overrated film of 2002. The acting and screenplay are fine and all, but the movie is too campy, and the CGI is near being awful. Also, the lack of having a powerful superhero theme hurts the film as well, but that's more of a minor complaint than anything else.

Spider-Man is nowhere near being in the same ball park with the original Superman (A+ and my favorite movie) and Batman (B+), as being the best superhero movie (It's not even better than Hulk and Daredevil). However, the second film comes close to being as good as Superman.

(Spider-Man) B-
(Spider-Man 2) A+

Best superhero movie ever made. Amazing visuals, good cast, incredibly entertaining and faithful to the source material. My 5th favorite movie of all time.

Not as good as the sequel, but surprisingly well done. And acted, and such.

Severely over-rated. The worst part of it was it's dithering, poitless storyline (and the waste of Willem Dafoe's face behind that crappy mask). A real letdown for me after being a big fan of Sam Raimi - esp. the Evil Dead series and A Simple Plan...

1 out of 5.

It was average. The story is well executed, and the special effects are great. I also thought the actors were good, but I thought the sequel perfected all of this, and was much better.

This film has nothing on the second spidey, but IMO it was the best superhero film since Batman(1989).

This had the best origin story of any comic book adaptation I've seen.

I love the movie, though I thought the Green Goblin was a bit too SFX and and glossy. The 2nd is most definitley the better film...
