Old School
Old SchoolQuote: Old School is a 2003 American comedy film released by DreamWorks SKG and directed by Todd Phillips, director of the documentary Frat House. The story was written by Court Crandall, and the film was written by Phillips and Scot Armstrong. The film stars Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell as three thirty-somethings who seek to re-live their college days by starting a fraternity, and the tribulations they encounter in doing so. One of the funniest friggin' movies of all-time. A

The audience was in hysterics - belly laughs filled the theatre - Old School is a true low-comedy classic. The writing, the set-pieces, the supporting players are all of an appropriately crude quality. Luke Wilson was just okay as the 'normal' guy, but Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell were stupendously funny. The soundtrack itself provided several ridiculously hilarious moments, as well as placing the characters in a specific cultural time period. Strangely, this was one of the rare movies I felt could have benefited from adding 15 minutes of running time (studies show that only 2-3% of movies need additional scenes, whereas 85% need 15 minutes cut, and another 12-13% are just right).
This is a great low-comedy!
I am personally ecstatic with the fact that 2003 has already added another classic to the pantheon of low-comedy. Perhaps we can hope for another banner year like 2001 (Freddy Got Fingered, Bubble Boy, Zoolander, Not Another Teen Movie)! Or even a pretty good year like 2002 (Goldmember, The Hot Chick)...
6 out of 5.
(Just a short additional note: An easy way to spot potentially good low-comedy movies, is to look for movie critics' scores of zero or 1/2 stars. There seems to be no genre that reviewers love to hate like the low-comedy genre?!?)

Old School was well-recieved for a "low-comedy." It had a 59% on RT.

Parts of it are really funny, but other parts are not. Doesn't come close to the absolute hilarity that was Anchorman.

Really the starting point for great comedies again.
For such a long time, there was a severe lack of good comedies. But then Old School came out, and then Anchorman, Wedding Crashers, 40 Year Old Virgin, etc... Comedies have never been better.
Anyway, back to the movie. Very funny.

It has some truly hillarious moments, but it's not quite the classic some make it out to be. All the leads are very good, but have been better somewhere else. There are some great setpieces (particularly the brick tied to dick scene), but they are very similar to many other ones we've seen before.

Oh get off the whole Animal House thing, the movie is 27 years old. All movies owe something to another movie. If its funny, its funny.

Back on Point, it was a start of a new generation of comedic actors, now known as the frat Pack. Which originally started with Zoolander but Old School made them known.
Zoolander- A
Old School A-
Starsky and Hutch- A-
Dodgeball- A+
Anchorman- A
Wedding Crashers- A+
The 40 Year old Virgin-(Starred new members of the frat pack) A-
So really I love their films so far, and Old School is no different, its easily the filthiest of them all up with 40 YOV. The Beginning of the new Great Vince Vaughn.

The News Crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stop with the lame Frat Pack!!
News Crew!!!!! It includes all of them! (except Owen Wilson, which Frat doesnt either) AND, it can include Paul Rudd, too!
News Crew makes a lot more sense and is a lot less lame!

I saw this in the theater and didn't really like it at first. I rewatched it on DVD and then fell in love with it. It is hysterical and one of the funnier comedies of the last ten years.

Believe me, the news crew is just as lame. At least the frat pack is a play at the Rat Pack. and it somewhat makes sense. They make movies that are aimed more at college people, Ages 18-30, who drink beers and try to get laid. the News Crew makes no sense. And the Frat pack includes Owen wilson now, check IMDB. If there are two it shouldnt include its, Jack Black, and sometimes Luke Wilson.
Why is the news crew better. It makes no sense. Apart from Anchorman nothing they've done has to do with the news. Its not like they make political or intellectual jokes. Frat Pack works.

As strange as it is...I still haven't seen this film despite seeing all other Frat Pack films except for the ones released this summer.

I finally saw it and it was funny as expected. Not quite on par with Wedding Crashers, but in the same ballpark as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, IMO. Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell really stood out while Luke Wilson was fairly bland and unfunny.

Re: Old School
The movie was a lot of fun, not like American Pie IMO, but especially at parts it was a great experience. But I don't think those clips are paced well. They just depend on running naked (who couldn't think of that? ), spilling wine there, drinking beer, or singing off tune? IDK, not the funniest parts in a comedy like this I think.
