I say S-maw-g, but it should be S-mao-g, like Chairman Mao.
Never have I heard anyone pronounce it is Shh-mau-g.

Never have I heard anyone pronounce it is Shh-mau-g. My phonetic spelling was meant to be the same as yours. The "MAU" pronounced the same as the chairman followed by a hard "g."

Yes, so I guess you are not the only one to refuse to say Smaug.

A great movie. It's blockbuster film production on another level, with superb visual effects and tremendous pacing, but overall I couldn't shake the feeling that Desolation of Smaug was ultimately filler until a supposed brilliant finale (which I'm looking forward to very much as this one left me on the edge of my seat). So overall, it's not as good as An Unexpected Journey, but still awesome.
The talking dragon, Smaug, is great, and voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. The effects here are top drawer, especially when the liquid gold is poured over him, but also the fire breathing and the scaley skin of the dragon are precise and visually spectacular. Orlando Bloom returns as Legolas, and the ending is left open for a big duel in the third film, but I much more enjoyed his friend, Tauriel (played by the gorgeous Evangeline Lily), she can kick some serious ass! All the dwarves are kind of useless. They pretty much get captured by everyone and are defenceless until they make a "deal" or someone takes pity on them. And the leader of the dwarves is a moron that I never liked from the first one -- his selfish true colours are slightly shown here.
Great credits song sang by Ed Sheeran, and the music throughout was generally good too. I think what these Hobbit films might be missing is a battle, which I'm pretty sure might happen in the third one. It was nice to see the inclusion/conception of Sauron, which then ties it into the Lord of the Rings films, and the way that the 'ring' is referred to as "Precious!", that got me smirking. Finally, glad to see Peter Jackson making a cameo right at the beginning of the movie. That was neat, and I love it when I notice stuff like that. The film is entertaining in a way that we've expected from these films. Peter Jackson is a craftsman. The film is filler, but it's the best filler I've ever seen. The Hobbit: There and Back Again just shot to #2 on my list of 2014 most anticipated movies.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring A- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers A The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King A+ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey A The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug A- I agree with this review. Though perhaps I liked it a little less (though based on what I first thought of TTT - I will probably grow to love this too once the trilogy is complete and the EE comes out). Spectacular filler is spot on. The storyline of the elves is surprisingly interesting and Tauriel is a welcome new addition (never thought Evangeline Lily was this stunning!). I did feel the Gandalf storyline lacking a little but I guess we have to wait for the third film for the pay off . Smaug doesn't disappoint though perhaps the time spent in the mountain became a little too repetitive. A year later and I still can't believe how weak the ending is. It was still an enjoyable movie in the moment, but I don't history will be kind to The Desolation of Smaug. In fact, ten years from now, I think The Hobbit trilogy's approval rating will be much lower than even the Star Wars prequels.

Re: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Overall, I thought this was about as good as the first, but then I liked the first more than most. The beginning part with Beorn and the spiders was very well paced, but once they get kidnapped by the elves, it becomes a slog once more. I like the Middle Earth world so much that even a sloggy pace won't ruin it for me, but it just makes me think how much better the Hobbit would have been as one film
Smaug was awesome, though. He was the only thing that looked real in the HFR.

Being remembered as completely useless is better than being remembered as a destroyer. However, I also think the prequels will have a comeback sometime in the future, when the millennial are in a position of influence. There's no generational gap between Rings trilogies.

Re: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Much better than the horridness of the first Hobbit. While not quite at LOTR standards it's still a solid adventure. The best of the trilogy, a bit over 5 Armies.
