Re: The Broken Circle Breakdown
This film, nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign-language film as the Belgian entry, is a devastating, yet also refreshing musical drama, overflowing with ache, honesty, and top-notch music. Presented out of chronological order, the film focuses on a couple who perform American-style country music live and find their spirited existence upended by their daughter's cancer diagnosis. Though European, their lives are shaped by their improbable adoration for the United States and its mountain-outlaw musical tradition, a complicated cultural blend which gives the film an interesting and unusual atmosphere. Various concerns, including the question of whether it is wise or cowardly to turn to faith to cope with grief, are addressed directly and profoundly.

Re: The Broken Circle Breakdown
A crowd-pleasing tearjerker. The film is about a simple story of a couple stricken with grief over their daughter's death. It is obvious that writer and director Felix Van Groeningen wants audiences to be deeply emotionally involved with the characters' misfortune. And he handles this well, letting the sorrow be experienced drip by drip, but not going all in. He achieves this by having the movie jump back and forth in time, intercutting between scenes of the couple each coping with the child's death and moments from their first meet to budding romance. There is a consistently quiet depressing mood pervading the scenes, perfectly aided by the emotional folksy bluegrass tunes the couple's band plays and sings.
I think the movie would appeal to a more mainstream audience if it was in English. The best way to enjoy it is let it take you and consume your emotions.
