Re: Now You See Me
You didn't like it because it didn't explain the magic? Seriously?

Re: Now You See Me
Not only, but part of what's not to like, is that it's very inconsistent with what to explain and what not to explain.
And also all magic aside, the whole thing of them being fugitives is so far fetched...so they switch phones so they can track the cop, then the cop finds out, and start tracking them, he finds where they are, they are kind of shocked, but at the same time it seems they want him to find them. Then Jack Wilder is burning everything except for one piece of paper which they finally need to fall in the hands of the cop, so the cop can fall into their trap. While they're doing this Jack Wilder a magician is fighting himself out of the hands of 2 cops, with just sleight of hand, but then even more crazy is how he escapes from them by car through NYC without causing any accidents to bystanders or himself. Then finally he apparently deliberately crashes his car so the cop can get the piece of paper, the same cop who's in on everything and even nearly gets himself killed trying to save Jack from the car.
It's too much really.
And I didn't think about the above the first time I watched it, but a second time around you start noticing all those things and it becomes less enjoyable.

Re: Now You See Me
I'm four years late to this one but finally watched.
The one word I can use to describe this is disappointment. First of all, the magic sucks. If you're going to base a movie around magicians that pull off major, Ocean's-style heists, the tricks have to look believable. Once you get that glossy sheen of special effects on a trick, it loses its effectiveness. I know it's a movie, but I just think it would have worked better if the tricks looked believable.
Then there's the main characters, not one likeable in the bunch. Everyone flows through each scene with an irritating smugness. Jesse Eisenberg may actually be the least offending here for the amount of smug on screen. And the camera sweeps over them like they really are these magical beings, but instead, they come across less like the Robin Hoods of magic and more like spoiled brats.
And nothing makes sense. I expected to leave my brain at the door, but at some point, you have to say "Seriously?" Even the car chase, and the ensuing explanation, is beyond ridiculous. It even features an extremely silly shot or two of Eisenberg sporting a comically large moustache as a disguise.
All that aside, in spite of itself, I do have fun on occasion. But those moments are few and far between.
