Re: Upstream Color
Willfully obtuse. Upstream Color plays out like the bastard love child of David Lynch and Terrence Malick. Unfortunately, it's not a gifted child, Upstream Color is stillborn. It's essentially Silver Linings Playbook for film snobs with their head up their ass. I waited for 9 long years for the follow-up to director Shane Carruth's debut masterpiece Primer and I am monumentally disappointed. 0 out of 5.

Not surprised you'd comment on my opinion of a movie you haven't seen / will never see.

Lighten up.
I will see it. You've made a common generalisation; "Oh, his avatar is Rocky IV, he will never see the elitist crap that I claim to love".

Well, you won't. But if you do I'd love to discuss why you won't like it.

Re: Upstream Color
Unique, intense and emotionally draining is more appropriate. There's some Mulholland Drive and Eternal Sunshine in there, but there's so much of Carruth's own style and voice that I'd never seen before (it's pretty much the polar opposite of Primer) and I fell in love with. It comes to Blu-Ray on May 7th and I can't wait to rewatch.

Re: Upstream Color
Sorry to hear it rubbed some of you as devoid of worthwhile subtext. As a film Upstream Color is clearly an incredibly subjective experience whose micro-budget occasionally betrays it's larger ambitions, but overall I appreciated it as a truly independent science fiction film possessing both grand philosophical ambition and a resonant emotional current. Upstream Color's elliptical editing, delicate handheld camera work, and dense soundscape resemble that of Terrence Malick, but it's also at once a singular experience and also a film that occasionally struggles to hide it's seams. If it's budgetary constraints show, I don't believe I can fault it for a lack of ambition. B+

Re: Upstream Color
Whatever, I don't think it's easy to perform as many tasks as he did to make this happen. Personally I'm willing to cut some slack to indie movies where the director also has to be actor, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, sound designer due to budgetary constraints. Even beyond that, I just don't agree that the film is utterly without merit.
I am sorry that you had a shitty experience though. Not much worse than feeling stuck in a movie you just can't get into.

Re: Upstream Color
Yeah fuck this movie. It holds some interest at the beginning, trying to set itself apart from other films but then just becomes completely boring and stupid. I would bang Amy Seimetz though.

Re: Upstream Color
This film just sprung to my mind. I like it. It takes it's time to make a point, but it fascinates too, and I enjoy the weird story mixed with stylistic type of filming.
