 Re: Oasis: Supersonic
Oasis are my favorite band, and I cannot help but view Supersonic, a new documentary charting their meteoric rise in the mid-1990s, through this prism. The film, by the same general creative team as the Oscar-winning Amy, says and shows almost nothing new to a devoted fan of the Mancunian brothers Gallagher and their Beatles-indebted, wide-screen guitar pop, but I am not also not sure it is cogent or informative enough to deeply engage casual listeners or the entirely uninitiated. The film flashily foregrounds the expected material—hotel-destroying bad behavior, tumultuous sibling rivalry—and briefly taps other veins—the abusive and then absent Gallagher patriarch, the coming and going of bassists and drummers—and ignores a great deal, including the band's contemporaries (Blur, Pulp, the Stone Roses, Suede) and Oasis' entire career after their Morning Glory tour. I also would have enjoyed a greater focus on the actual creation of the music and album art. Overall, Oasis: Supersonic is still an entertaining ride—it is hard not to be delighted and invigorated by vintage clips from now-legendary gigs, the Gallagher brothers' biting one-liners, etc.—but it is not particularly insightful and far from comprehensive.
