Crossing Over is a 2009 American independent drama film about illegal immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film deals with the border, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter-terrorism and the clash of cultures. Crossing Over was written and directed by Wayne Kramer, himself an immigrant from South Africa, and is a remake of his 1995 short film of the same name. Kramer produced the film alongside Frank Marshall.

Crossing Over was filmed on location in Los Angeles in 2007.

Crossing Over

A decent drama about the business of illegal immigrants and American citizenship, told from both sides of the battle. From Wayne Kramer, the director of Running Scared and the initial director of Bullet to the Head, is a solid film with some interesting points raised about fairness, kindness, right and wrong, and whether the law is really designed to protect. There's some paranoia about Jihadist Muslims, and I actually side with the Americans on this point, which is odd because the film was trying to show the F.B.I. as inept paranoid idiots, but I think they had reason act as they did - basically, if you're illegally in another country, don't start causing problems.

Harrison Ford does well, as does Cliff Curtis. Well, everybody does well in this film, but Ashley Judd and Ray Liotta are basically cameos they're in it so little. Sarah Shahi makes an appearance here and there too. The film reminded of Traffic how it doesn't center on one story, but it mixes 5 or 6 different arcs, then they sort-of meet throughout. This movie and Lions for Lambs, are the two most important movies of the last ten years regarding America's societal issues.

So that's three good movies from Kramer, I'm anticipating his next feature, Pawn Shop Chronicles.
