A Long Way Down
A Long Way DownQuote: A Long Way Down is a 2014 British black comedy film directed by Pascal Chaumeil, loosely based on author Nick Hornby's 2005 novel, A Long Way Down. It stars Imogen Poots, Toni Collette, Pierce Brosnan, and Aaron Paul as four strangers who happen to meet on the roof of a London building on New Year's Eve, each with the intent of committing suicide. Their plans for death in solitude are ruined when they meet as they decide to come down from the roof alive — however temporary that may be.

Re: A Long Way Down
The main ensemble work well together and it offers some interesting insight into suicide but it never really pushes itself when the opportunity is there. The film falters a bit in its climax but with the cast and its easiness of getting through everything else, it's at least worth a decent watch.

Re: A Long Way Down
Hm. A charming, if relatively minor novel by the great Nick Hornby becomes a bit of a crap film. The storytelling is rushed and uneven as it compacts the characters and events of the novel into an hour-an-a-half film, and the blend of suicidal despondency as a theme and self-help whimsy as an overarching style results in a discordant, tone-deaf quality plaguing nearly every scene. It honestly becomes more depressing, more wearying, the more uplifting it tries to be. Nice enough performances by Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, and Sam Neill, however.

B-
I like Nick Hornby and I like the cast, but this is not a great Hornby-novel and it resulted in a not-so-great film. I actually think the first half is pretty good, but it becomes kinda bland towards the end and the changes in characters don't really carry any weight. In fact, almost nothing here caries much weight, considering it is about four people wanting to commit suicide. Toni Collette and Aaron Paul deliver the best performances here, while Sam Neill is utterly wasted. Imogen Poots has a nice ass, though.
