Quote:
Hysteria is a 2011 British romantic comedy film directed by Tanya Wexler. It stars Felicity Jones, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rupert Everett and Hugh Dancy. The film, set in the Victorian era, is about the invention of the vibrator. The film's title refers to the once-common medical diagnosis of female hysteria.

Pretty lame, and tame, considering the subject matter. At least Rupert Everett is fun.

Of course he will - it's about rich, white British folk.

I didn't, honestly. And I went in excited because, yes, I tend to love this type of film.

Random, super-minor observation: why did they feel the need to specify, via text on the screen, the exact prison and exact day (Christmas Eve) during the final scene? This is a "period piece" which obviously plays incredibly loose with the facts, so I just found this strange. Out of the blue.

Definitely this.

It turned a rather awful time for women into a weak, flimsy comedy about finger-banging.

Sadly, they don't make 'em like this anymore. At least not very often.

A simple story, well told with dramatic, comedic, and romantic elements overlaying an untold part of history (or should I say hystery?).

All your fave old British actors along with good ol' Maggie Gyllenhaal, ably recreate the dawn of modernism in Victorian England. Strangely the much trumpeted sex aspect of the tale plays only a minor part in the film - - to it's benefit.

I wish there was still a market for small feature films like this one - - it's such a treat to see a good one.

12 out of 5.

I found it to be an enjoyable romp. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy were charming.

7/10 ( B )
