I'm a sucker for baseball films. This one is pretty much bargain barrel though. Selleck is not really that likable a character most of the way and it's way too safe. It gets interesting and a few laughs when it goes more into the fish out of water aspect, but it often then falls right back into familiar territory. The idea itself could have made for a very interesting baseball movie. The romance aspect is decent, but if they cut it out they could have tried to do more with a struggling slugger playing in Japan.
