But you do need her there. Nikki's presence at the competition is what upsets Tiffany and makes her vulnerable before and after the dance. It works because it makes her even more caught off guard when Pat catches up with her after.

That's right - Nikki needs to be there. It may have been tidy (and the whole "parlay bet" thing was fantastical) but it was the ending the film needed.

I see where The Dark Shape is coming from, but the ending was too satisfactory and enjoyable for me to dislike how everything worked out so perfectly.

Post Re: Re:
I see TDS's point, but I disagree. I think on this occasion the film didn't cheat to a happy ending. I think that this dance competition, as much you want to belittle it, was important in the grande scheme of things because JL's character cared so much about it and De Niro's character was set to win a lot of money on it. Everything didn't magically go away either, but the characters were feeling great after doing well in the competition (or well enough to be happy) and so their feelings and emotions were running wild, and as people do in those situations, they take risks. Running after her was the risk, and it did all end happily.

The next day might have been less happy, but the film ended where it should have.

I finally got to see this today. I really enjoyed it. Jennifer Lawrence was deserving of the win for this role. It's a shame Bradley Cooper had to have this performance in the same year DDL played Lincoln. In many years, Cooper would have won for this performance. I also thought De Niro and Weaver did a good job. Even Chris Tucker was good.

My favorite part was the scene where Tiffany busts in to a family argument and sets Pat's dad straight on what actually happened. That was awesome.

The ending did seem to come together a bit easily considering the personal struggles of all the characters throughout the film, but that's a minor complaint because I like the happy ending in this case.

Cooper should have won despite the competition from Mr. Day-Lewis.

No. Just no. And I loved Cooper in this, but no.

Cooper was better in this. DDL was overrated as hell in Lincoln - he was so much better in both There Will Be Blood and Gangs Of New York. I actually thought Tommy Lee Jones was the best part of that movie.

What he said. Day-Lewis was a god in There Will Be Blood, but not so much in Lincoln. He gave a very good, subtle performance that deserved praise, worthy of an oscar nomination for sure, but not a win.

But the subtlety completely fit the subject matter, and he was still extremely compelling to watch. It wasn't a case like his performance in Nine, where he did a good job, but didn't really blow anyone way.

I thought Bradley Cooper was fantastic in Silver Linings, and he'd easily get my #2 vote (yes, even ahead of Joaquin Phoenix). But winning over Day-Lewis in Lincoln? Nah.

Post Re: Silver Linings Playbook
I just finished watching this for probably the thirtieth time in two years and it has never once lost it's effect on me. To me it is one of the very few perfect movies out there. I also love how much you get out of it on repeat viewings. I remember when I first saw it that I thought Jennifer Lawrence was the stand out, pure and simple. Now watching it, I fully admit I was wrong and that Bradley Cooper is just as great as Lawrence. There are so many little things that he does with his performance, like the scene where he is going to see his psychiatrist and flips out over hearing the song, that are just so quiet and absolutely perfect. It's a truly beautiful movie and I fully believe it's on my top ten movies of all time list.

I also really love how unlike most popular Oscar films, this has received little to no backlash. Most people still absolutely adore it. I can post a quote on my Facebook from it or tell someone I'm watching it and everyone chimes in about how brilliant it is. Such a perfect fucking movie.

I'm actually looking forward to my second viewing. Lawrence and Cooper have grown on me since, and I even liked their performances the first time (especially Cooper).

Simply quite love the film. It's great overall, mainly due to an excellent Bradley Cooper. Lawrence is also very good, although I'd not call it award winning and the rest of the cast is equally as well filled out. Might be O'Russel's best film.

Yeah...but if it was up to me history would be different.
The length of this thread surprised me too, but I guess that's just because WOKJ was A LOT more active then.

You'd not call it award worthy. ;)

This was a Best Picture nominee. Seven pages doesn't seem crazy. The Dark Knight has 75 pages or something.

That (The Dark Knight) is probably the most discussed film on the board.

I've been wanting to see the Silver Linings Playbook since a long time, but never found the right time for it, was glad to find it on the aeroflot media drive which otherwise didn't have many exciting choices either. It deserves the attention it got.

Why did you put that in brackets?

It might be the most discussed of all-time, yeah. Talking of recently, it would have to be either Beauty and the Beast or The Great Wall. :D
