Shadow of the Vampire
Shadow of the VampireQuote: Shadow of the Vampire is a humorous metafiction horror film released in 2000 directed by E. Elias Merhige and written by Steven Katz, and starring John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, and Udo Kier. The film is a fictionalized account of the making of the classic vampire film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens, directed by F. W. Murnau, in which the film crew begin to have disturbing suspicions about their lead actor. The film borrows the techniques of silent films, including the use of intertitles to explain elided action and iris lenses. The film received two Academy Award nominations, Best Supporting Actor and Best Makeup, but lost to Traffic and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, respectively.

Re: Shadow of the Vampire
In theory this should be great, but I found it plodding and awkward and poorly-made. Dafoe and Malkovich are reliably terrific, but nothing else really measures up, especially the silent film techniques and frequent visual homages to the original film.

Re: Shadow of the Vampire
Malkovich is really the only good part of this film. Dafoe tries too hard and ultimately fails whereas a majority of the script is poor or just plain laughable.

Re: Shadow of the Vampire
Very fun movie. Dafoe is fantastic. Tries too hard? Please.

Re: Shadow of the Vampire
This movie is the most effective use to date of Willem Dafoe's naturally off-putting personality. He's definitely not trying too hard, this is a career best performance that deservedly got him an Oscar nod.

Re: Shadow of the Vampire
It's a great premise that the plodding and pretentious Merhige smothers to death
