Smokey and the Bandit is a 1977 American film starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason, Jerry Reed, Pat McCormick, Paul Williams, and Mike Henry. It inspired several other trucking films, including two sequels, Smokey and the Bandit II (originally known as Smokey and the Bandit Ride Again in the U.K., New Zealand and Australia), and Smokey and the Bandit Part 3. There were also a series of 1994 television movies (Bandit Goes Country, Bandit Bandit, Beauty and the Bandit and Bandit's Silver Angel) from original director/writer Hal Needham loosely based on the earlier version, with actor Brian Bloom now playing Bandit. The three original movies introduced two generations of the Pontiac Trans Am (while the TV-movie version drives the Dodge Stealth). The film was the second highest grossing film of 1977, beaten only by Star Wars.

It can sometimes be a tricky thing for somebody to explain or justify why they love or admire a film. The usual Oscar bait is pretty easy to fawn over without somebody decrying you as a shallow fool or somebody with bad taste but if you refuse to use the old "guilty pleasure" nonsense with blatant popcorn affairs you do risk that those of furrowed brow and smug voice will look on you as a cancerous leper, a person to be pitied from a distant and never touched.

Well with Smokey and the Bandit I can say fuck off to anybody who looks down on its level of silly enjoyment, because this movie deserves mountains of praise as you won't find many films that carry out their brief so completely.

Its so unashamedly 70s, a torrent of CB Radios, Bell Bottoms and Politically Incorrect Sexual innuendo with liberal splashes of country music and redneck madness and its bloody brilliant because of that.

Burt Reynolds behind the wheel of a massive gas guzzler that seems to have a jet for an engine is a glorious two fingered salute to the current obsession of Hollywood fawning over the environment. Am I a person that cares for the planet? Of course! do I like a film that doesn't lecture to me like a stern teacher? Fuck Yes!!!

Jackie Gleason is criminally enjoyable as the chasing Police officer and the non stop chase is so good it should be classified as a class A drug.

Don't bother me with mention of the vile shite that was Dukes of Hazzard this is the ultimate good old boys movie.

Thats a big 10.4 Burt!

I read Burt Reynolds book and have been going through his filmography since I'd only seen the movies he made later in his career.

Smokey, like the two McKlusky movies, is a fun southern fried action comedy full of car chases and jokes about the people chasing them. They're all kind of the same type of driving porn, and none rise to greatness, but I've enjoyed my time in this world.

Smokey is probably a bit better because of Gleeson and Field and the dog. But the airboat chase in Gator was more exciting than anything that happened here.

I've become fonder of the movie in the few days since I first watched it. I didn't give it proper credit for world building, as its just more fun to be around these people than the fine folk in Gator. Raising grade to a B+ and I watched the sequels too.

I'll probably be laughed out of the room, but I liked Smokey II even more. Sure it mostly just a rehash of the first one plot-wise, I'll concede that. That's all though. It is funnier (Burt running on foot against the horses killed me) , has more memorable set pieces (death of a rollercoaster + trucks v Mounties) and most importantly, the main characters must look at themselves in the mirror and grow in order to reach the film's end. A-

I can see why Reynolds and Fields passed on part 3, it is pretty lame. But it's not the worst movie ever and I still enjoyed the additional eighty minutes of SmokeyBandit world. I like the original of Smokey Is The Bandit a bit better than what we saw, but Snowman being so happy to finally get to play the bandit is probably my favorite scene in the entire movie. C
