 Exit Through the Gift Shop
Exit Through the Gift Shop Quote: Exit Through the Gift Shop: A Banksy Film is a film which tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant in Los Angeles, and his obsession with street art. It is presented as a documentary, but reviewers have questioned its factuality. The film charts Guetta's constant documenting of his every moment on film, to his chance contact with his cousin, the artist Invader, and his documenting of a host of street artists with focus on Shepard Fairey, and also Banksy though the latter's face is never shown, and his voice is distorted to preserve his anonymity. The twist in the tale comes when Banksy turns into the filmmaker, while Guetta decides to become an artist, under the name Mr. Brainwash (MBW). The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on 24 January 2010. It is narrated by Rhys Ifans. Music is by Geoff Barrow. It includes Richard Hawley's "Tonight The Streets Are Ours".

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
I wasn't particularly blown away by Exit Through The Gift Shop - - the winking at the camera was a little too "on the nose" for my taste (it's almost Borat-esque) - - but as an art documentary it was heaps of fun.
8 out of 5.

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
As a documentary, it's fascinating; as a possible Banksy prank, it's something else entirely.

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
a film by Banksy
??
Whatever, this is another entertaining twisted documentary so succeeds (hilariously) in exploring the theme of 'everyone wants to be found' (or as I may put; 'caught in hype'), one way or another. And I mean 'everyone'. A

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
It's obviously a prank on people's appreciation of art these days (no other way around, imo). Amazingly, it goes right back at Banksy himself. This documentary obviously is trying to say 'look at me, I know it all'. Like I said, 'everyone wants to be found'. And I'm including you, Banksy.
But however you look at it, it's still amazing.

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
It's on Netflix watch-now.
It was cool seeing the origins of street art and especially seeing it through the eyes of both Thiery who is an inexperienced camera man and Banksy along w/ the slew of other talented street artists. It was obvious near the end Banksy was trying to drill into our head what he considers real art isn't always what the general public considers real art.
Overall it was very entertaining and I would recommend it to anyone.

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
Exit Through the Gift Shop is a bit iffy and while it has some great art, I was left unamused. The life of a graffiti artist was a great grab at the beginning and that alone could of turned out to be some solid stuff. Once the tables turn, however I didn't care if it was a prank or not or what the message was. Fairey can't be more obvious that he is being scripted. He just seems like such an annoying person to be around. Why couldn't we just get some more of the great life story of Bansky? Maybe it's also because I'm not as big of an art person. Whatever, I was very disappointed. *1/2

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
A pleasure. First, it's a blast. A fast-paced nocturnal blend of art, music, "crime," history, Noel Gallagher, etc. Pure fun in the way the best Guy Ritchie movies are. Second, as a critique/"deconstruction" of art, its value, its basic definition, etc., the film becomes fascinating and almost moving. And there's the general Banksy mystery; his "presence" is incredibly engaging, and you feel as if you are being let into his exciting circle, even if you aren't. And it feels good. This won't win the Oscar, though, becauses it uses the documentary form to create what might be termed a popcorn-movie experience, and it's not centered on how terrible the American education system is or how war is hell.
It's thoughtful, but also breezy.
Loved the bit with the Princess Diana bills. Hilarious.

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
If it's nominated, will Banksy show up?

This is amazing, I actually didnt even know that it was a question Thierry was real when watching. I think it has to be a hoax. You cant tell me thats a real guy. I think Banksy laid one of the biggest ethers ever on the art industry

Re: Exit Through the Gift Shop
Ok so after reading it up, it seems there is no doubt about Thierry being real and this weird. What I think happened is that everything up until the Banksy show and seeing Life Remote Control was real (Thierry meeting the street artists and filming them and them planning to make a movie). But then Banksy and Fairy decided to trololol the art world after the snobs overextended themselves to be hip with street art. I think they saw Thierrys art and knew it was hack worthy enough to be exactly the type to would blow up so they got their people to make a huge show. If it works he has the ultimate ether of the art industry, ever, and even better, hes created a monster that can keep trolling it forever. If it doesnt work, all it took was a little money that he probably had more than he wanted of. I think Thierry is 100% real and still thinks everyone likes him because hes a great artist lol
