Re: Gnomeo and Juliet
Gnomeo and Juliet pretty much charms the dang pants right off of ya!
What a sweet, twisted adaptation of Shakespeare's most well known tragedy. The sense of humor veers through wildly elaborate set pieces to endearingly esoteric laughs. It's very smart, kinda subversive, and outright hilarious.
The voice cast is a unique blend of awesome: how about Ozzy Osbourne and Dolly Parton?! Patrick Stewart and Hulk Hogan as Shakespeare and the Terrafirminator, respectively!?! Maggie Smith and Michael Caine!!?!! Jason Statham as doomed Tybalt. Emily Blunt deservedly in the title role along with James McAvoy who seems to be channelling Ewan McGregor these days, to good effect, no less.
The whole thing ascends to a frothy Hairspray style musical at times, yet remains grounded in drama and action scenes set to a rousing orchestral score. It's an inspired combination that sets the stage for this engaging 84 minute delight.
The animation is funny in itself, even before you get to the story - - it is an irreverently primitivized cgi that creates sophisticated visual humor throughout the frame just as classic Warner Bros. cartoons once did.
Gnomeo and Juliet rock!
163 out of 5.
(PS: Another example of worse than pointless stereoscopic 3D - - it adds nothing to the already brilliant use of 3D cgi, while sucking the life out of the colors and clarity.)

Re: Gnomeo and Juliet
Good movie. Looked better than I anticipated. Good voice work. I don't think it was anything special, but it was a good movie.

Decent animated film. I laughed out loud a few times.

Re: Gnomeo and Juliet
It has some cute moments but the film never fully hits the stride it could of and it was a bit messy at times. **
