Sure it's an idealized up-to-date fairy tale of innocence - - but far more importantly it showcases nerds of all types: physical, intellectual, and emotional (and in all their magnificent combinations).
I especially enjoyed it's dry humor, floating above the steady flow of disappointment, it leavened this meal of petty injustices.
Plus, it's not a musical (which in this particular case is a good thing).
The cast was all hyper-cast, as it were - - all amplified and melodramatic yet authentic - - they're all just so darn bright and shiny even in disillusionment. No need to leave your cynicism at home for this one - - dive right in to the pity pool!
What a surprise!
Prom is a self-contained little masterpiece of the fairy tale telling art.
