Post Re: Fright Night (2011)
I have had this type of remark directed at me before, but I'll address it again. Point a: it's false I don't give movies low grades. I've given many films lower than a B this year. Maybe not as many as trixster or makeshift if you parse it out, but eh, I'm not them. Point b: I'm not seeing movies at free screenings. I pay first-run prices. Therefore I try to avoid movies I'm certain I will detest, such as Spy Kids 4 or Shark Night. If I see a movie in theatres and give it below a B, such as The Green Hornet or Sucker Punch or The Adjustment Bureau or Our Idiot Brother, then chances are it disappointed me because I expected to at least have fun with it. Point c: if you find what I write annoying, don't read it. I'm fine with not being taken seriously by you, lol.

And I'd rather enter a theatre excited and positive, even overly positive, than have this whole, "Your movie is a C, prove me wrong (except you, Fincher)" angle on things.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with going into a theater wanting to like a movie (and I think there's an overly-negative vibe to a lot of people who want to hate films walking in; it's my belief if you see a film, you should at least want it to be good). But putting on happy blinders is just as bad.

I don't know if you've ever actually seen any of my posts, but I'm hardly as negative as you seem to think I am. I saw 64 movies theatrically in 2010 and gave all of one of them a flat-out F.

Well, daddy-o, I saw 137 movies and counting in 2010, and I gave four, count 'em, movies an F and, whoa, -five- a D.

Sounds like you're the one lacking that discerning, intense outlook on the cinematic arts...

No. I just go to school.

And 137 over the course of not just 2010 proper, but also catching up with leftover films over the course of the first eight months of 2011 isn't SO hard to do.

Nah, it's possible, BKB. I'd be able to do it if I wasn't working 12-14 hours a day.

I had all but given up hope of seeing this, but lo and behold the powers that be deigned to permit a 2D screening in my theatre, and wadda ya know...

Fright Night is my kinda horror movie!

Very, very good - - great! WOW!!!

Just the right mix of humor to amplify the scares. That's hard to do.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that the cast is fantastic - - Colin Farrell as Jerry is an outright treat. Anton Yelchin plays a tricky role to perfection. David Tennant was hilarious as the magnificent Peter Vincent. Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Imogen Poots, and Toni Collette - - all superb!

The director Craig Gillespie has one great movie (Lars and the Real Girl) and one stinker (Mr. Woodcock) so Fright Night swings the balance to a majority of awesomeness!

I am so glad that the cursed vampire that is 3D was banished from my theatre - - this was too a dark movie to be wearing sunglasses. Because of the glory of 2D, I had the opportunity to see this delight in first run.

Fright Night is terrific.

I get where Gun is coming from. I don't give many F's or D's either because I tend not to see movies I'm positive I won't like. Besides, not many movies even deserve those ratings. Those are reserved for movies with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and most movies, even ones I don't like, aren't all bad.

Fright Night is a really fun horror flick. It actually shocked me a few times but it goes by very smoothly and it is a fun ride to take. It is nice to see Anton Yelchin make a return to the screen this year and he puts in a solid performance as does Colin Farrell and David Tennant. ***

David Tennant makes the movie. If the entire movie was centered around him then this could've been something real special. Instead it settles for just being good.

Fright Night

Well, it’s a slick vampire horror flick, not intended to scare, but intended to excite, and because of its amateur cinematography and awful use of visual effects, it fails as anything remotely entertaining. The only thing good in this film is Imogen Poots. Such a babe! Just a shame we didn’t see her tits. But it also has Anton Yelchin who, while I hate him, the role is suited to his one-note way of acting, so he wasn’t the worst here, but he was still pretty bad. Surprisingly the film has many other known faces too; Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco, and David Tennant (doing his best Russell Brand impression). But it was still cool. But yeah, back to the film itself; it’s just bad. The CGI vampire faces are tacky and cheap-looking. I also felt the whole film was too dark too, and it didn’t take its time in the beginning – it just rushed right in when there was a perfect opportunity to string out the "is or isn't our neighbour a vampire" narrative. And Farrell, as much as I like him, just feels wasted here, and also a bit out of his depth. I also feel like slashers like this are perfect for cool soundtracks, but I don’t remember any cool tracks playing throughout, instead they are left for the end credits. What a waste!

I absolutely love this movie and re-watch it fairly regularly.

It is annoying to remember my conversation with Dark Shape in this thread, however.

I wanted to like it so much, and I felt it started well enough, but it's so shitty. I'm glad someone enjoys it, though.

How does it compare with the original? And, having not seen the original, I got the impression that this was more of a sequel than a "remake"...

It is a straight-up remake. Original is pure 80s cheese.

It's just that Farrell's character alludes to the fact that he scared up Tennant's character when he was a boy. I thought that may have been the original.

This was a fun watch. Kinda fun seeing this after I saw Anton and Imogen go through other nightmarish terror in Green Room.
