SHE FED A PERSON HER SHIT. She went to the bathroom, dropped one, fished it out of the bowl, cut or pulled a part of it away, and mixed it with chocolate. This is not a winning cinematic moment. It's Jackass 4.

This is not a winning cinematic moment. It's Jackass 4. Not really? It's not like you actually see her doing it. The implication is enough. Also, it sort of makes sense in the context of the film since the Hilly character is so dead-set on having separate bathrooms built for the help (i.e. it makes it the ultimate embarrassment for the character). Plus, not to belabor the point further, it was in the novel too.

Re: The Help
The implication is disturbing and disgusting.
And I'm sure it was just as gross in the novel.

Re: The Help
sorry I meant Remember the Titans...
The whole shit eating scene reminds me of the controversy over the Spike Lee film "Do the Right Thing"
Where a fight occurs between 2 black guys and the shopkeepers, and the police arrive and beat the black guy and he dies, and then the local blacks riot and set the white people's shop on fire.
Most people after watching the film are angry over the mob destroying the white people's shop and simply forget about the black guy.

Re: The Help
So yeah this actually isn't too shabby. Emma Stone (Cold Fox) is quite good as she usually is in films, Davis and Spencer are quite good and Chastain stands out quite a bit. Despite approaching two and a half hours, the film doesn't drag. It definitely puts in a good mix of comedy and drama as well. This all being said, I really hope it does not become some huge Oscar winner because this isn't 4-star good though it is enjoyable. ***

Re: The Help
I'm watching this with my family and my sister can't understand a lot of what's being said. LOL. I turned on the subtitles and she says she can't read those either because they go too fast.

Re: The Help
Read the book last week and watched the movie tonight. Really enjoyed it. Very faithful to the book, leaving in all the important parts and barely trimming the unnecessary stuff. Although Skeeter's boyfriend should've been dropped. It was barely necessary to the novel, except to give her a lovey-dovey love interest, but even less so here without meeting his parents, among other things.
Still, great movie. The ending in the book felt more stark and abrupt than the movie. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Re: The Help
Surprised at how much I liked this. Unlike Crash or Precious, it's not really a movie concerned with trying to make a racial message stamp. It's just fun 2.5 hours carried by a good story and characters that jump off the screen. To quote a line in the movie, this thing has hutzpah! It's the complete opposite of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to me, that film felt dead and lifeless, this thing was overflowing with energy.
Very impressed by Tate Taylor's work, the editing here is great - It seems like every scene and character subplot never goes too long or too short and none of them drag down the film, which is not an easy thing to do. And it takes work to get an acting ensemble this consistent and the look and feel of Mississippi down like this. Even at 2.5 hours this thing flew by, I didn't want to get up from my computer to refill my water bottle
Viola Davis is AMAZING. Of course she's winning the Oscar for this. There's a handful of moments where her eyes and face are quivering in tired of this shiat remorse and anger that just blew me away. Spencer is kind of a caricature, but she did the job I suppose. Happy to see that Chastain nomination too, that was probably the most difficult role in the film, to be a bimbo and a sympathy drawing human at the same time (Bryce Dallas Howard is not as succesful pulling off villain + human although it seemed like the film didn't want her to be)
Great stuff! Biggest surprise for me, thought it'd be cringe worthy white guilt material like Precious

Re: The Help
Its like TBS, a very crowd pleasing film but its a better film.
Better story and characters and the setting is interesting.

Re: The Help
The film picks up the tone of the novel very well. Just a very light, breezy read that's interesting start-to-finish. Not ground-breaking and not trying to be.

Re: The Help
I totally didn't realize this was a remake of Salò.
