The Bourne Identity

Quote:
The Bourne Identity is a 2002 American spy film loosely based on Robert Ludlum's novel of the same name. It stars Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, a psychogenic amnesiac attempting to discover his true identity amidst a clandestine conspiracy within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The film also stars Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Brian Cox and Julia Stiles. This film is the first in the Bourne film series, being followed by The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). The fourth movie, The Bourne Legacy, is scheduled for release in July 2012.

The film was directed by Doug Liman and adapted for the screen by Tony Gilroy and William Blake Herron. Although Robert Ludlum died in 2001, he is credited as the film's producer alongside Frank Marshall. Universal Pictures released the film to theaters in the United States on June 14, 2002 and it received a positive critical and public reaction.

A fun, realistic spy thriller. Liked it a lot. B+

I thought it was good, but a bit overrated. I haven't seen the sequel yet so hopefully that one's better.

I own this on DVD and it's a movie that I think actually improves with repeated viewings. Matt Damon steps into a mature role that he handles believably. Chris Cooper is good as always in his role. I haven't seen the sequel yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I rate this a B+.

Very good movie. But not even close to the Ludlum's book version. The novel is the best fiction novel there is IMHO.

What a fantastic idea: a realistic action movie. Well drawn characters, gritty action scenes, exciting from start to finish. Who would have thought that Matt Damon had something like that in him. (B+)

I found the film very overhyped, it definitely was by the time it arrived here. It is a nice, raw spy thriller. Matt Damon was a good choice for the role, but the film definitely lacked a good villain and the car chase wasn't as exciting as many described it to be. The film has a good story and the one big fight scene of Bourne with that assassin is great. Other than that, the action in the film is rather unremarkable. Franka Potente makes a decent female lead, but essentially she isn't given much to do.

The sequel is better, but this is a good movie nonethless. First-rate action movie that is a cut above the standard "popcorn" fare.

An unexpectedly great thriller, A- and let me be the first to say I think it's leagues better than the sequel.

It's not terrible, but I'm just not into this series very much. This was a tad better than the sequel though, at least it didn't have the headache fight-scene filming.

C. Matt Damon was the only problem in this movie, and the directing was shaky.

Damon is pretty good here, though not exceptional. The same can be said for the entire production. It's interesting, fun, and fairly intelligent, but doesn't manage to be much more. The better entry is Supremacy.

Oh, and the book truly is better.

It was BRILLIANT and clearly head and shoulders above any of the current BOND movies featuring Brosnan.. I'd give this an "A" and look forward to the 3rd Installment..

Really enjoyed The Bourne Identity last night (circa July 2002) - now that's a summer movie!

This is what the Mission: Impossible franchise should have evolved to by the new millennium -- even James Bond (the "real" one, pre-Daniel Craig era) could have learned a thing from Jason Bourne in this movie...

5 out of 5.

{Note: Remembering this, I feel sad for the career of director Doug Liman - he started off so well with this movie and Go before it, then made the very average Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Hopefully, 2008's Jumper will show a return to form...}

One of my favourite spy thrillers. Matt Damon is terrific and the action is incredible. The car chase is one of the best in recent memory. Though it's lacking the style of its sequel, it's still very well-directed and the story is involving and intriguing. Entertaining, but never dumb or silly.

I've really come to like The Bourne Identity since I first saw it. I think I regard it as an A- now. I particularly like it because the action is great and it's the start of the franchise, so everything is a first. And Clive Owen is in it.

I was never into this series when it was release but binge watching it now has increased my respect for this series. Bourne Identity is not the best movie of the series but it serves as a great introduction to the series with a great story, decent action. Damon's turn is overshadowed by the story and Clive Owen who is magnetic whenever on screen.
