Re: X-Men: First Class
7/10 -> B-
It's a good movie. Though it's a bit too safe to be the best of the series. It's pretty much a straightforward movie, which I find is a step backward from Singer's movie that kinda tried top drew social parallels here and there. "Mutant and proud of it!" slogan is the only thing that comes close to that, but the rest of the movie doesn't bother on implementing the problem of being a mutant much.
I think Fassbender and McAvoy were both pretty great, though I'd say McAvoy was slightly better. Charles did end up as an ass of a character, thought I blame writers for that, not McAvoy. The rest of the mutants were an afterthought (even Mystique). I liked it. It was good while I was watching it, but it didn't leave much of an impression on me. I definitely don't think this was one of the better comic book movies like the general consensus on WOKJ seem to be.

Re: X-Men: First Class
Watching this on hbo.
Excellent performances by Fass, McAvoy, and Lawrence. WOW did Kevin Bacon ham it up. Bacon and January Jones really ham it up, as does Kravitz daughter - pretty much all the villains are entirely one dimensional. The friendship between Magneto and Xavier is the most well developed relationship of the entire x men series, and both play it very well. Lawrence does a lot with limited writing.Everything else is very average. Music, writing, acting from everyone else...some really cheesey moments too ( that kid who screams so he can fly? lol). Xavier yelling "No!!!!!!!!!" when Magneto kills Bacon. Kevin Bacon really, really hams it up. So cringeworthy. The beach scene at the end, when the bad guys all randomly just team up? Mystique just leaving? Watching this, could not help wondering "where the hell was Fass when they were casting anakin skywalker circa 2000? He'd have been perf. Seems like this could have been a classic movie, but instead was just decent. very much like xmen 1. A few really good performances, by xavier and a badass (wolverine, magneto) to carry a cookie cutter story.
If the studio had some balls, they would have made this story a 3 film series, played out every christmas for 3 years. Just felt too underdeveled.

Re: X-Men: First Class
I remember when I first saw this the thing that impressed me the most was Fassbender's acting and seeing this repeatedly on cable it feels like the only great thing about the entire movie honestly. I mean he owns the role as Magneto without a doubt and I love the James Bond vibe he gives off, but what else is their to really say about this movie ?
I thought the action sequences were ok, but I don't think any of them come close to even topping the opening scene of X2 with Night Crawler in the White House. The rest of the cast does a commendable job acting wise too, but Fassbender easily out shines them all.

And January Jones? dear god. I can't blame Vaughn for casting her cause he got to sleep with her but man.
but man, Fassbender/McAvoy. completely makes this film worth watching. truth

I remember watching and I remember thinking it was good in a I-enjoyed-that-McDonald's-Big-Mac kind of way. There are better options on the market, but it did enough to make me not dislike it. That being said, I don't remember much of it now.

You really don't want to be that guy I have a guy that sits outside my McDonalds waiting all day to get enough change just to eat the Big Mac. I say get a McDdouble, but he wants to treat himself.

So my opinion of the fifth one, X-Men: First Class, in a word: Liked.
...but I'll tell ya, it was much closer to Loved for about an hour in the middle third of this movie - - but the other 75 minutes of this movie drag it down like an anchor. By the end it's becoming obviousness stacked on obviousness. There's a great 95 minute movie in here - - I just hope the shortened director's cut pulls it out of this rather bloated storyline of a super hero movie.
Lots of great and good actors, but too many characters, of course, and thus many get short shrifted.
So despite the verve contained within, XM:FC is tragically too long and too short.
4 out of 5. My X-Men mantra has now extended to: Liked, Hated, Loved, Skipped, Liked, Loved, Liked.

Re: X-Men: First Class
Just rewatched this. I think the tone of this is pretty cool and most of the cast is good (January Jones as Emma Frost... yikes)
Not perfect but it's very breezy but still takes itself seriously.

Re: X-Men: First Class
Captain America: Civil War reminded me of this movie with Iron Man's, "[I would let him go, but] he killed my mother" dialogue. I believe Michael Fassbender's Magneto says almost the exact same line of the Kevin Bacon character.

Re: X-Men: First Class
This is so good, its a shame that the next installments with just this cast went down the drain. McAvoy and Fassbender are SO GOOD in here. The action is great and staged well (even though the finale could have been better). One of the best movies in the franchise.
