The Purple Rose of Cairo is a 1985 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen. Inspired by Sherlock, Jr., Hellzapoppin', and Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author, it is the tale of a film character who leaves a fictional film of the same name and enters the real world.

Great premise for a Woody Allen film not executed completely to its potential. the acting from the main girl and her husband are a little weak and cliche. Jeff Daniels pulls two great roles though, and dare I say it, no Woody Allen in sight.

Probably the best Woody Allen flick I have seen yet (out of overall 6-7). It was genuinely touching and Mia Farrow deserved at least a nomination at that year's Oscars her performance as the naive Cecilia was excellent. Jeff Daniels is a bit bland, but I guess he is supposed to be. The movie really brings its point home well about the distinction between cinema and reality.

A perfect movie? Yep. Woody Allen had a small idea, and executed it to perfection. It's all over in less than 80 minutes. Probably the best movie ever made about the movies.
