Re: L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties
L.O.R.D. is a tough movie to review. On one hand, it has the most impressive motion capture cgi animation I've seen to date. I rarely felt the creepy touch of the uncanny valley - in fact, the Chinese stars often seemed like enhanced versions of themselves (I can only imagine what this technology will look like in another 25 years). The story, on the other hand, is ridiculously overcomplicated. Seven dukes and their seven disciples and all of their soul beasts battle it out against assorted forces of evil across four kingdoms. While I admire it's ambition (it's a rare movie that I find too complex, usually I complain about the stupidity of screenplays), L.O.R.D. would require you to take notes and make flowcharts to hope to adequately untangle it's storylines. Legend of Ravaging Dynasties was worth seeing - it's definitely something different, but ultimately it ends up an earnest misadventure, though I still look forward to seeing the sequel if it gets released in North America. *C+*
