 Casablanca Casablanca Quote: Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz, starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid, and featuring Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Set during World War II, it focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, love and virtue. He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her and her Czech Resistance leader husband escape from the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.
Although it was an A-list film, with established stars and first-rate writers—Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch received credit for the screenplay—no one involved with its production expected Casablanca to be anything out of the ordinary; it was just one of dozens of pictures produced by Hollywood every year. The film was a solid, if unspectacular, success in its initial run, rushed into release to take advantage of the publicity from the Allied invasion of North Africa a few weeks earlier. Despite a changing assortment of screenwriters frantically adapting an unstaged play and barely keeping ahead of production, and Bogart attempting his first romantic lead role, Casablanca won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Its characters, dialogue, and music have become iconic, and Casablanca has grown in popularity to the point that it now consistently ranks near the top of lists of the greatest films of all time.

This is, IMHO, the best movie ever made. It has everything, drama, serious theme, romance, action, great performances by the leads, great character turns but the supporting parts, a well written plot, great camera work, great score, memorable lines you name it. It is also, not surprisingly, the textbook definition of a studio system film. Favorite scene - the Marsielles scene, where it becomes clear that Rick still cares, under the facade.

The greatest romance ever made, and in the top 10 for films overall, I'd say.

You know... I have never seen this film. :ph34r: I rented the DVD so I may just watch it... now.
*Edit* Just finished watching it and I give an.... A, surprisingly... :razz: Excellent film.

Very well-made romance, but I thought it was clichéd at times. I know for the time it was made it, it most likely did not seem this way, since audiences weren't spoiled with too many bad romances yet, but the fact is that I saw the movie not back then, but now and for now it did seem predictable, even if only a bit. Other than that, the movie is blessed with two actors who have great chemistry. Ingrid Bergamn is okay, but not great. Humphrey Bogart, however, is great and filled with great charisma. Claude Rains was pretty good as well and complemented Bogart very well. The screenplay is very well-written so many classic lines...
"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
The ending is great.

Honestly, even I've seen this movie. There's noe xcuse for the rest of you, if I've managed to see this.
I haven't seen it in two years or so, so I don't remember specifics. I remember loving the ending, the acting, and the screenplay. A hollywood classic in every sense. A.

I'm pretty sure this is the only timeless classic that I haven't seen. I'm surprised, too, since Bogart and Lorre were hot off of The Maltese Falcon, and I love that film so much.

When I said "You should see this", I meant Casablanca, by the way. I haven't seen Seven Samurai myself yet. Casablance is one of the better romances I have seen in my life.

Not enough explosions, huh?
Every person I have ever recommended this film to has been hesitant -- oh, an old black and white film with Nazis? (Yawn). And then they see it and go "Hey, you were right -- that was a great film!"
A. Well deserved of its place in film history.

The movie really takes off once Bergman hits the screen. Her and Bogart really have great chemistry. The other thing that stands out is how beautifully choreographed the movie is. An absolute classic in my eyes.

One of the classics that actually lives up to the hype. Though the romance gets a bit cheesy at times, the story is so involving and the acting is so good that it makes no difference. Bogart is pretty good, but it's Claude Rains who steals the show in a supporting role. He's fantastic. Chock full of memorable quotes and infamous scenes. Very well made.
