The Jazz Singer

Quote:
The Jazz Singer (1927) is an American musical film. The first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences, its release heralded the commercial ascendance of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. Produced by Warner Bros. with its Vitaphone sound-on-disc system, the movie stars Al Jolson, who performs six songs. Directed by Alan Crosland, it is based on a play by Samson Raphaelson.

The story begins with young Jakie Rabinowitz defying the traditions of his devout Jewish family by singing popular tunes in a beer hall. Punished by his father, a cantor, Jakie runs away from home. Some years later, now calling himself Jack Robin, he has become a talented jazz singer. He attempts to build a career as an entertainer, but his professional ambitions ultimately come into conflict with the demands of his home and heritage.

I was going to post some thoughtful, analytical, short review, instead I just didn't like this. The cliches make less attempt to hide themselves than in that silly "On The Waterfront" movie, which this kept somehow reminding me of. Probably cause they're both bad in similar ways except completely differently. There is something to be said for technical revelutions and all that, but this is one of those cases were you think, couldn't they have done more with it than a toaster? We can already cook stuff other ways. It's not that I hated it, but if I can predict every single plot element to the T within 20 minutes of the credit reel, well that's stuff for modern hollywood horror movies, note the FIRST talkie ever! Ah well, not a great re-entry to classic film, hopefully Alexander Nevsky will prove more worthwhile tomorrow.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Did you really expect that much from "the first talkie"? Sound took cinema back at least 10 years.

So I have learned. I didn't expect anything extraordinary, but I certainly did not expect this wretched film.

You should watch Jolson's "Hallelujah I'm a Bum," from a few years later. Until the unfortunate final five minutes, it is sublime.
