Quote:
Carlito's Way is a 1993 crime film directed by Brian De Palma, based on the novels Carlito's Way and After Hours by Judge Edwin Torres. The film adaptation was scripted by David Koepp. It stars Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, Luis Guzman, John Leguizamo, Jorge Porcel, Joseph Siravo, and Viggo Mortensen. The film's featured song, "You Are So Beautiful", was performed by Joe Cocker.

The film is based mainly on After Hours, but used the title of the first novel to avoid it being confused with Martin Scorsese's 1985 film of the same name, and focuses on Carlito's activities once he is released from prison. Carlito Brigante, a fictional Puerto Rican criminal vows to go straight and to retire in paradise. However, his past will not let him, and he unwittingly ends up being dragged into the same criminal activities that got him imprisoned in the first place.

Carlito's Way received a mixed response from critics, with a similar lukewarm result at the box office, but has subsequently gained a cult following. Both Sean Penn and Penelope Ann Miller received Golden Globe nominations for their performances. This was when Pacino and Miller experienced their first offscreen romance as well. A prequel titled Carlito's Way: Rise to Power, based on the first novel, was filmed and released direct-to-video in 2005.

Not as good as Scarface but it was little more poetic and the cinematography was better. I think if you see the movie long enough you will find alot of hidden values in it on how forgiveness is not necessarly a good thing and it will haunt you again. Humans can be evil at times. Carlito was too much of a forgiving man and in the end, one of the mobsters he spared killed him in the end

A-, I also liked this more than Scarface. Sean Penn and Viggo Mortensen both gave their best performances in this movie.

Enjoyed it as much as Scarface. Though Carlito Brigante is a character to care for more than Tony Montana. The chase at the train station was fantastic.

Pacino’s character is great, though sometimes his persona definitely falls in and out. A really good story filled with great characters, cinematography, and great direction by DePalma. It drags a little at times, but it’s stilll a very effective crime drama. B+

Love this movie. I get why so many people love Scarface, but I find this to be a much better film. Pacino's character is way more likable and sympathetic than Tony Montana, and I think the supporting cast along with the direction is aces as well.

I honestly don't get the Scarface comparisons. Is it really just a drug film with Pacino doing an off version of an accent that are similar. They are two extremely different films after that.
