While not rising to the same vaunted ground as Ronny Yu's American directorial debut (...not many movies could live up to the horror-comedy masterpiece standard set by Bride of Chucky!), Freddy Vs. Jason was actually a pretty okay movie. It's got your classic horror movie set-ups, it's got your creative gore, it's got your interesting teenagers galore for bait. Unfortunately, in my view, it's got too little comedy! This sort of movie stew can really benefit from the right spice of dissing self-referential humour. While there was some, mostly provided by the babilicious Kelly Rowland, and Freddy himself of course, this rates a one viewing limit. Keep moving, there's not much to see here...

3 out of 5.

To me, the line Freddy should never cross with his humor is simple: Would he rather kill you or make a joke? For the first four films (yes, even Nightmare 4, because he was still dangerous), if it came down to it, Freddy would rather gut you. But started with Nightmare 5, that changed. Take the comic book death as an example. Freddy chases the kid on the skateboard (!). The kid's backed against the wall, nothing to do now as Freddy approaches... and then Freddy disappears to continue the joke/set-piece.

And of course, Freddy's Dead is just absurd in regards to funny Freddy.

True, but he still has never apparead as menacing and dangerous again as he was in the very first film. I mean, yeah, the second Nightmare was still ratheron the serious side, but it didn't make it a good movie still, heh. The 4th movie is on the line. True, he does kill people right away then, but he is already more humorous than before and just...different...trying to make his kills more and more "complicated", like the whole bug thing. Looks cool, but I liked the more simplistic approach before that.

I think they did a good job of balancing the two series and their characters, but imho, Freddy rules - and this was really Nightmare on Elm Street 8 with special guest star Jason Voorhees.

That's pretty much it. You could replace Jason with an entirely new serial killer, have pretty much the same plot (Freddy uses another killer to escape Hell), and call it A Nightmare On Elm Street 8. But you couldn't take Freddy out, replace him, and call it Friday the 13th, Part XI.

But that is exactly the problem I have always had with the entire F13 series. Jason is just so...bland.

Holds up really well. I think this is my favorite of the sequels of both franchises. Everything about the kids is generic, except the amount of gore, and there are actually jumping moments, and the fights are fantastic. That final fight is just so much fun, the kids are some of the better acting, but they are the right amount of annoying that you cheer when they are about to eat it.

A+ for pure entertainment.
Solid B for the experiment in the horror genre that it is

overall A-

I hope they do a sequel and bring Englund back

Upon further review...

Finds a very nice evil/funny Freddy balance, but the kids are the worst group in a Nightmare flick; they drag the film down. Last thirty minutes are great fun.

I think this is one of the few times the actors are actually in on the joke, I find their acting to be much more tolerable than most films in either series

It's easily the worst acting in the Nightmare series.

Wes Craven in New Nightmare comes around for that job

But like said, the other films have had much worst acting but the actors themselves seem to know they are stereotypes, and play their stereotypes great.

They're not in on it. Check out Crystal Lake Memories.

Even Nightmare 1 has better acting than FVJ, and that had frickin' Ronee Blakely. The kids in FVJ are bad even by F13 standards.

Ehh, I didn't mind the acting at all because the whole enterprise was at no point to be taken seriously.

Yeh i didn't find the acting that bad.

Kelly Rowland was the best of the lot though. She got some funny one-liners.

They don't start fighting until an hour into the 90 minute flick. Yeah, the teens better not be wretched.

Freddy vs. Jason

Sure, it's crap, but it's fun crap. Robert Englund's Freddy is now a parody of himself and thus is not scary. Jason was never scary to begin with. So what's left for Ronny Yu to work with? He basically makes it a comedy with some action thrown in. He could have made it gritty and disgusting (ala Rob Zombie's Halloween), but he doesn't have the artistic know-how for that. Apart from Monica Keena (wow, cleavage), nothing in this film is worth watching. While the film is meant to be a duel between Freddy and Jason, neither of them can die, so it's utterly pointless.
