Quote:
Heavenly Creatures is a 1994 film directed by Peter Jackson, from a screenplay that Jackson co-wrote with his wife Fran Walsh, about the notorious 1954 Parker-Hulme murder case in Christchurch, New Zealand. Filmed on location in Christchurch, New Zealand where the events took place, it features Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet in their screen debuts. The film deals with the obsessive relationship between Pauline Parker (Lynskey) and Juliet Hulme (Winslet), two teenagers who murdered Parker's mother (Peirse). The events of the film cover the period from the girls' meeting in early 1953 to the murder in 1954.

Heavenly Creatures opened to strong critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival in 1994; it became one of the most well-received films of the year. Reviewers praised most aspects of the production, however particular attention was given to the performances by a previously unknown Winslet, co-star Lynskey and for Jackson's directing achievements. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Great film. Beat's The Fellowship of the Ring as Peter Jackson's best film. Engrossing and heartbreaking it is a story that is perfectly balanced in it fantasy and reality.

Without a doubt one of the most emotional films I've ever seen, and certainly ranks into my "Top 20". 9.0/10 (A)

Pretty much, yeah.

The movie makes me feel

The worst part is, these people are real and still alive.

Wow. I don't think Peter Jackson did very well getting inside the girls' heads, but I didn't care. In terms of sheer muscular filmmaking bravado, this is an impressive, intoxicating piece of work.

I almost feel guilty falling for the movie's brazen application of show-offy technique, but I can't really help it.
